    62.8Comparison ScoreHow It’s Calculated

Western Carolina's Sociology BS links research methods, data analysis, and sociological theory with room for electives and study in another field. The university's transfer guide requires a second major, minor, or another approved program. It also describes an optional Engaged Learning Experience, planned through an adviser-approved contract specifying the activities and work to be produced. Possible formats include an internship, independent study, or an international travel course. That gives you a concrete way to connect a classroom question with supervised work beyond a regular course.

    51.7Comparison ScoreHow It’s Calculated

BYU-Idaho’s Sociology BS starts with a 15-credit core: Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Explorations, Sociological Theory, Research Methods and Sociological Analysis. You’ll also take Social Science Statistics, and the catalog says to finish it before Sociological Analysis. From there you choose 24 credits of electives from courses such as Sociology of the Family, Race and Ethnic Relations, Sociology of Mental Health, Social Stratification, Crime and Delinquency and Demography. The degree ends with a choice between a senior thesis and a senior internship in sociology. Major courses need a C- or better, and the program offers an accelerated option you can talk through with your department chair and adviser.

    Florida Atlantic University

    Sociology BA

    Boca Raton, FL Public

    73.4Comparison ScoreHow It’s Calculated

Florida Atlantic’s Sociology BA asks students to complete Sociological Theory and a survey of research methods before their 4000-level sociology electives. The department says those advanced courses include original sociological research projects, so the upper-level work is more than a topical survey. Students can build the other electives around their interests while meeting the major’s 3000- and 4000-level distribution. A separate eight-credit modern-language requirement belongs in transfer planning, since prior college language work, CLEP, or Advanced Placement may satisfy or contribute to it.

    University of North Georgia

    Sociology BS

    Dahlonega, GA Public

    56.9Comparison ScoreHow It’s Calculated

North Georgia’s Sociology BS requires a minor, giving you a defined second field alongside the sociology major. Its research preparation combines statistics with Sociological Research Methods and Advanced Social Theory. You then select eight upper-division sociology courses, building on earlier work in social theory and sociological careers. The catalog lists Dahlonega, Gainesville and a fully online option. When choosing electives, plan for both the minor and the major’s grade requirements: sociology and major-area courses must be completed with at least a C.

Kennesaw State’s Sociology BS requires an applied choice: cooperative study, an internship or upper-division study abroad. Theory, research methods and a senior seminar are required in the major, alongside courses on inequality and social organization or technology. You choose a concentration in General Sociology, Culture and Social Change, Criminology or Medical Sociology. The degree is available face to face or fully online, but the department advises online students to plan early because not every online course runs each semester.

UNF’s Sociology BA begins with two introductory sociology courses, then a core of Social Research Methods and Sociological Theory. You then add one more methods course: Qualitative Research Methods, Social Science Data Analysis or a program evaluation course, each building on Social Research Methods. Six sociology electives fill out the major, and the list includes a Sociology Internship, a Sociological Research Experience and directed individual study alongside courses such as Urban Sociology, Social Stratification and Sociology of Immigration. The BA also requires a minor, unless you double major, plus either a two-course foreign language sequence or the foreign culture option.

Georgia Southern’s Sociology BS pairs theory, research methods and data analysis with a choice of General or Human Services concentrations. The Human Services option adds study of counseling, evaluation, human development and social policy. Every student completes a senior capstone project or an internship, so there is a project-based alternative to a placement. The university offers the degree online and at its Statesboro and Armstrong campuses, with the same coursework and concentration choices available through the online program.

FGCU’s Sociology BA requires Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory and a Senior Capstone, plus one research methods course: Social Research Methods or Qualitative Research Methods. You then add 18 credits of upper-division sociology electives. The catalog’s degree map pairs first-year sociology with a statistics course, either Statistics Through Examples or Statistical Methods, and places the capstone in the spring of your fourth year. Beyond the major, you’ll meet FGCU’s Service-Learning, Civic Literacy and sustainability course requirements, and 30 of your last 60 credits must be completed at FGCU. 78.7Comparison ScoreHow It’s Calculated

UCF’s Sociology BS puts Social Theory, Applied Social Statistics, and Research Methods in an advanced core, then reserves a large block of restricted sociology electives. Most of those electives must be upper-division courses taken in UCF’s department. The department says its undergraduates conduct their own research with a faculty mentor, giving the methods sequence a practical use. Internships and independent study are possible within the elective block but require prior departmental approval; they are options to arrange, not automatic placements attached to the major.

    82.5Comparison ScoreHow It’s Calculated

Florida’s Sociology BA sequences statistics before Methods of Social Research and places Development of Sociological Thought later in the degree, after 90 credits. Majors finish with 32 sociology credits plus a statistics course, and they must pass a department exam on basic sociological concepts. Beyond that common sequence, the catalog points to community internships, faculty projects, and independent senior-thesis work. Those options are useful to inspect separately: the course requirements are fixed, while the research or internship experience depends on the opportunity a student chooses.

How Far Apart In-State Tuition Is on This List

For in-state students, the whole list sits within $1,751. Western Carolina publishes $4,630 in tuition and fees, and the University of Florida publishes $6,381. The other eight fall between those two figures. If you qualify for in-state tuition, the published price alone won’t separate these sociology programs much.

That narrow band means the costs the tuition figure leaves out, like housing, a meal plan or a car, can move your total more than your choice of school on this list. Use the table to compare the published figures and graduation rates, then price the rest of the year for the campus you’d actually attend.

What Out-of-State Tuition Adds at Each School

Out of state is where these schools split apart. UF goes from $6,381 to $28,659, more than four times its in-state figure, and Florida Gulf Coast goes from $6,118 to $25,162. At the eight Florida and Georgia public universities here, the out-of-state premium runs from $11,512 at North Georgia to $22,278 at UF.

Western Carolina is the exception among the public universities, at $8,630 out of state. It’s part of North Carolina’s NC Promise plan, and its current page lists tuition of $500 a semester for in-state students and $3,500 for out-of-state students. Because this list uses 2024–25 figures, check WCU’s current out-of-state bill before you budget.

BYU-Idaho is private and doesn’t charge by state, so its in-state and out-of-state figures are both $4,800. It prices by Church membership instead. Its 2026–27 cost page lists campus tuition of $2,544 a semester for members and $5,088 for students who aren’t members. If you aren’t a member, plan on twice the member rate.

What the Published Tuition Figure Leaves Out

Each figure on this list is the 2024–25 schoolwide tuition and required fees for one academic year, before any grants or scholarships. It isn’t specific to the sociology major, and it doesn’t include housing, food, books or transportation. Tuition also changes from year to year, so use it to compare schools, not as your bill.

Fees and living costs can outweigh tuition. Western Carolina’s 2026–27 sample for an in-state student living on campus lists $500 in tuition and $1,878 in fees per semester. A residence hall adds $3,263 to $3,785, and the Unlimited Basic meal plan adds $2,493.10, each per semester.

BYU-Idaho’s cost page shows the same thing from another angle. Alongside tuition, it budgets for books and supplies, transportation and personal expenses each semester. Ask every school on your shortlist for its cost of attendance, and run its net price calculator to estimate what you’d pay after the grants you’re likely to receive.

  • Included: tuition and required fees for one 2024–25 academic year.
  • Not included: housing, food, books, supplies, transportation and personal costs.
  • Not subtracted: grants, scholarships and state aid.

Ways to Lower What You Pay for a Sociology Degree

Residency is worth the paperwork. At UNF, it’s your job to file a residency declaration with your documents, and the catalog says an incomplete or missing declaration by the deadline means you’re classified as a non-Florida resident. With $13,443 between UNF’s in-state and out-of-state figures, that deadline matters.

If you finish high school in Florida or Georgia, look at state aid before you compare prices. Florida’s Bright Futures Scholarship Program offers lottery-funded scholarships for high academic achievement. Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship helps residents with part of their tuition at eligible colleges. Five Florida and three Georgia universities appear on this list.

Starting at a community or state college can cut the cost of your first two years. UCF’s DirectConnect guarantees admission, consistent with university policy, to students who earn an A.A. or statewide articulated A.S. from a partner state college. UNF and FGCU both list 6 credits of lower-division sociology as prerequisites, so take those before you transfer.

Ask how far your transfer credit will go before you enroll. FGCU requires 30 of your last 60 credits at FGCU, so earlier credit shortens your degree but doesn’t let you finish it somewhere else. Get a written credit evaluation from each school and compare the semesters you’d have left, not just the tuition rate.

  • File your residency declaration and documents before the deadline.
  • Check state scholarship rules in the state where you finished high school.
  • Take lower-division sociology and statistics before you transfer.
  • Compare semesters remaining after a credit evaluation, not just tuition.

What You Keep and What You Give Up at a Lower Price

Every school here reports a schoolwide graduation rate of at least 50%, but the range is wide. UF reports 91% and UCF 78%, while BYU-Idaho and North Georgia report 50%. Each extra semester adds another tuition bill, so a school where more students finish can cost less in the end.

College Scorecard’s median earnings for each school’s sociology graduates run from $34,726 at BYU-Idaho to $52,197 at UCF. Kennesaw State reports $52,125, UF $51,039, Florida Atlantic $50,983 and FGCU $50,136. A median is the midpoint for past graduates, not a promise for you. Pay depends on the job you take after graduation, so use these figures to compare schools, not to forecast a salary.

Program size differs too. UCF awarded 108 sociology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24 and UF awarded 99, while Western Carolina awarded 15 and FGCU awarded 12. Size changes what you’ll find on the schedule, so ask each department how often the sociology electives, methods courses and internships you want are offered.

Questions About Paying for a Sociology Degree

Which Sociology Bachelor’s Program on This List Has the Lowest In-State Tuition?

Western Carolina University, at $4,630 in published tuition and fees for 2024–25. It’s part of North Carolina’s NC Promise plan, and its current page lists in-state tuition of $500 a semester. Required fees still apply on top of that tuition.

Sources: [1]

How Much More Do Out-of-State Students Pay on This List?

It depends on the school. BYU-Idaho publishes the same $4,800 for everyone, and Western Carolina adds $4,000. The Florida and Georgia public universities add between $11,512 and $22,278, and UF’s out-of-state figure of $28,659 is the highest here.

Does the Tuition Figure Include Housing and Books?

No. It’s the 2024–25 schoolwide tuition and required fees for one academic year, before aid. Housing, food, books, transportation and personal costs come on top, and they can add more than tuition does. Ask each school for its cost of attendance and run its net price calculator.

Sources: [1][2]

Why Does BYU-Idaho Charge Some Students More?

BYU-Idaho prices tuition by Church membership rather than state residency. Its 2026–27 cost page lists campus tuition of $2,544 a semester for members and $5,088 for students who aren’t members.

Can I Start at a Community College and Transfer Into One of These Programs?

Starting at a community or state college can lower your cost. UCF’s DirectConnect guarantees admission, consistent with university policy, to students who earn an associate degree at a partner state college. Check the final-credit rules too: FGCU requires 30 of your last 60 credits at FGCU.
