What You Study in a Sociology Degree

Most sociology majors start with theory and then take courses on subjects such as family life, organizations, inequality, and social change. Upper-level options are where programs start to diverge. A school with strong health courses will feel different from one centered on cities, policy, or criminology.

Surveys, Interviews, and Social Data

Methods courses may ask you to design a study, interpret surveys, work with interviews or observations, and explain what the results do and do not show. If you hope to work in research after graduation, a senior project or substantial methods sequence may matter more than an extra topical elective.

Look Past the Word “Sociologist”

BLS lists a master’s degree as the typical entry education for sociologists. A bachelor’s degree can still support applications for research assistant and community roles, especially when you have methods work or an internship to show an employer. The major and the occupation with a similar name are not the same credential.

Research Assistant

Survey design, data management, and clear writing connect directly to research support work.

Community and Policy Work

Studying institutions and social conditions can support work with nonprofits or public agencies, depending on the role.

Graduate Sociology

A master’s or Ph.D. is the usual path toward jobs titled sociologist.
