BA or BS in Sociology
Four required courses form the spine of Oregon’s sociology major: an introduction (Introduction to Sociology or Social Inequality), Social Theory, Research Methods and Statistical Analysis. BA in Sociology
Foundational courses at the University of Portland introduce sociological concepts before advanced classes take up social inequality, globalization, race and ethnicity, and gender. The 40-credit Core Curriculum sits beside the major, and the department’s Holy Cross framing emphasizes service and ethical leadership. The 2023–24 graduating group numbered 12.

Sociology (Major)
The path through sociology at Reed moves from an introductory course to a Junior qualifying examination, then a research methods course, and finally a year-long senior thesis. You write the thesis in five parts, from problem formulation through analysis and conclusions, work with a mentor, hand in a full draft at the midpoint of the second semester, and defend it in a two-hour oral examination. Five more units of sociology fill out the major. Because current research leans on advanced math, the department encourages extra statistics, including summer courses at the ICPSR Summer Institute. Reed awarded 6 degrees here in 2023–24.
