The degree title also deserves a close read. A disciplinary MA and a professional degree in applied politics can appear in the same field comparison while asking you to spend your time differently. Use the ranked cards to examine each school’s published award and course structure.

Choose Between Political Research and Applied Politics

The CUNY Graduate Center requires a master’s thesis and includes a tutorial to support it. Florida State’s MAAPP is a professional Master of Science with a practicum in applied American politics and policy. Their final work points toward different academic experiences even though both sit within political science.

Ohio University provides an article-length research paper or an Applied Politics Project, with a thesis possible in exceptional cases. That offers another distinction: applied work can still require research and analysis, while a research degree does not always require a conventional thesis.

Describe the work you want to do before contacting a department. A question about voter behavior, a legislative issue and a campaign communication problem may call for different methods and supervisors. Ask which route lets you investigate that question and what finished work you can show afterward.

Compare Political Science Master’s Programs by Final Project

Non-thesis does not mean no research. UCF requires an article-length paper and a presentation at a public academic forum on its non-thesis route. The thesis route adds a committee, proposal defense and oral defense. Both require a comprehensive examination, so the choice changes the form of the work rather than removing it.

Florida Atlantic admits students to the non-thesis route first and allows a later request to move to a thesis with departmental approval. You should therefore distinguish an advertised thesis option from a thesis route you are already approved to enter.

Ask how the department assigns supervision, when the thesis decision must be made and whether a seminar paper can become the final project. At the CUNY Graduate Center, substantial revision of a seminar paper is one way to develop the thesis. That makes the relationship between coursework and the final paper a useful planning question.

Match Political Science Methods Training to Your Question

UCF pairs Conduct of Political Inquiry with Quantitative Methods in Political Research. North Texas lists quantitative political research methods covering empirical design, statistical applications and computer use. These are concrete courses to inspect if you want to analyze political data.

The CUNY Graduate Center allows its research-tool requirement to be met through quantitative methods, qualitative methods, another approved method or a foreign language. The appropriate preparation therefore depends on the evidence your research needs. Language study and statistical analysis are not interchangeable conveniences for the same project.

Look beyond whether a methods course is present. Ask which prerequisites you need, what software or source material you’ll use and whether you can take the next course in the sequence. If your intended project requires interviews, archives or another form of field research, discuss those requirements with a potential adviser before settling on a program.

Plan Practicums and Experiential Learning Before Enrolling

Georgia State includes experiential learning that can take the form of an internship, consulting project or study abroad. Florida State’s MAAPP combines professional work with a paper in its practicum. Those requirements can be central reasons to choose the degree, but they also affect when and where you can study.

For a placement-based route, ask who finds the host, who approves the work and which academic deliverables accompany it. If you plan to keep your job, discuss whether your schedule can accommodate the placement before committing to the degree. Don’t treat an online course option as proof that every practical requirement happens from home.

Compare the pace as well. Ohio describes its MA as a full-time year of study. That is a different starting point from assuming you can spread any master’s across evening classes. Get a term-by-term plan showing required courses, final-project supervision and the practical work, then test it against your responsibilities.

Evaluate a Political Science Master’s Beyond the Ranking

Start your final comparison with the admission route. A standalone master’s accepts applications for that degree. A master’s earned along the way to a doctorate has a different purpose and entry process. Read the exact award and application instructions, particularly when a department presents graduate degrees together.

Next, ask what you will have completed by graduation: a defended thesis, an applied project, a presentation or professional work with an accompanying paper. Compare that output with the next position or degree you want. The political science doctoral rankings can help you inspect the research expectations of a later PhD without assuming a master’s guarantees admission.

For cost, request a written estimate for your actual course load and completion route. The ranking shows schoolwide graduate tuition and required fees, which do not establish the price of every political science program. Discuss tuition, mandatory charges and the terms of any funding separately. A funded offer with specific conditions is more informative than a general statement that assistance is possible.

Questions About Political Science Master’s Degrees

Do I Need a Thesis for a Political Science Master’s?

Not every program requires one. Ohio allows a research paper or Applied Politics Project, while UCF offers thesis and non-thesis routes. CUNY Graduate Center requires a thesis. Compare the actual final requirement with the research experience you want instead of treating the word master’s as one uniform format.

Is an Applied Politics Degree the Same as a Political Science MA?

Read the award and curriculum. Florida State’s MAAPP is a professional MS with a practicum and coursework in political management, communication, campaigns and policy or research. A thesis-based political science MA organizes the final work differently. Choose by the course and project requirements, not the acronym alone.

Do Non-Thesis Political Science Programs Still Require Research?

They can require substantial research. UCF’s non-thesis route includes an article-length paper and presentation at a public academic forum. Ohio’s applied route requires a project involving research and analysis. Ask for the final-project requirements and assessment criteria before assuming non-thesis means coursework alone.

Can I Switch to a Thesis After Starting a Master’s?

Florida Atlantic allows students who entered without a thesis to request a switch after completing graduate coursework, with departmental approval. Treat that as a program-specific policy. Confirm the timing, adviser availability and approval process at each university before enrolling with a thesis plan in mind.

Can I Keep Working During a Political Science Master’s?

Check the published pace and required experiences. Ohio describes a full-time year of study, while applied programs can include substantial placement work. Ask for the actual class timetable and practicum expectations. A part-time course load only works if the required sequence and final supervision fit it.

Will a Political Science Master’s Prepare Me for a PhD?

Compare the research you’ll complete with the doctoral programs you may apply to. A thesis, methods training and faculty-supervised paper give you concrete work to discuss. UCF and CUNY illustrate different ways to organize that research, but completing either route does not promise admission to a doctoral program.
