What In-State and Out-of-State Tuition Mean on This List
Residency is the biggest price swing on this list. At eight of the 10 schools, out-of-state students pay $11,512 to $19,044 more a year than residents. The widest gap is at Florida Gulf Coast University, where the in-state figure is $6,118 and the out-of-state figure is $25,162.
Two schools break that pattern. Western Carolina University is part of North Carolina’s NC Promise plan, so its 2024–25 out-of-state figure was $8,630, only $4,000 above in-state. But for out-of-state students who first enroll in Summer 2026 or later, tuition rose from $2,500 to $3,500 a semester, so expect a higher bill than the table shows.
BYU-Idaho is private and doesn’t price by state, which is why both columns show $4,800. It prices by church membership instead. Its 2026–27 table lists on-campus tuition of $2,544 a semester for members and $5,088 for non-members. If you aren’t a member, plan around the higher number.
How Much In-State Tuition Differs Among These Programs
Not by much. The full in-state range is $4,630 to $6,118, a difference of $1,488 a year, and seven of the 10 programs sit between $5,444 and $6,118. At Western Carolina, one semester in a residence hall costs more than that whole yearly gap, so don’t choose on tuition alone.
Out-of-state is a different story. Among the eight public schools outside North Carolina, nonresident figures run from $16,956 at the University of North Georgia to $25,162 at Florida Gulf Coast. If you’re crossing a state line, the out-of-state column matters far more than the in-state order.
| School | In-State Tuition and Fees | Out-of-State Tuition and Fees | Graduation Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Western Carolina University | $4,630 | $8,630 | 60% |
| Brigham Young University-Idaho | $4,800 | $4,800 | 50% |
| Florida Atlantic University | $4,879 | $17,324 | 63% |
| University of North Georgia | $5,444 | $16,956 | 50% |
| University of West Florida | $5,776 | $18,658 | 59% |
| Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University | $5,785 | $17,725 | 53% |
| Kennesaw State University | $5,808 | $17,736 | 52% |
| University of North Florida | $5,964 | $19,407 | 65% |
| Georgia Southern University | $6,022 | $17,734 | 55% |
| Florida Gulf Coast University | $6,118 | $25,162 | 57% |

What the Published Tuition Figure Includes and Leaves Out
Every number on this page is the school’s 2024–25 annual tuition and required fees for a full-time undergraduate, before any grants or scholarships. It’s a schoolwide figure, so political science majors pay the same base rate as everyone else at that school. Rates change each year, so check the school’s current tuition page before you build a budget.
The figure leaves out housing, food, books and travel, and those can cost more than tuition. Western Carolina shows this clearly for 2026–27. In-state tuition is $500 a semester, but required fees add $1,878, a residence hall runs $3,263 to $3,785, and an unlimited meal plan is $2,493.10.
It also leaves out aid. Grants and state scholarships can bring what you actually pay well below the published number, especially if you qualify for a merit program in your home state. Run each school’s net price calculator with your own family’s numbers before you compare final costs.

How to Cut the Cost of a Political Science Degree Further
Start with residency. Eight of these schools are public universities in Florida or Georgia, so residents of those two states have the most choices here. Florida residents should look at the lottery-funded Bright Futures Scholarship Program. Georgia residents should look at the HOPE Scholarship, which pays part of tuition at eligible Georgia colleges.
Community college is the other big lever. Florida Atlantic University says transfer students can complete lower-division requirements through an A.A. degree from any Florida public college. That lets you finish general education before you start the political science major, then move to the university for the upper-level work.
Check how your credits will count before you enroll. Kennesaw State puts Research Methods in its lower-division field-of-study core, and Florida Gulf Coast requires you to take all required major courses at FGCU. A course that doesn’t match the plan can add a semester, and one extra semester at any school here costs more than the $1,488 in-state spread across the whole list.
If you’ll study part-time, ask about per-credit pricing. Western Carolina charges in-state part-time students $41.67 per credit hour for 2026–27. The University of North Georgia and Georgia Southern both offer their political science degree fully online, which can save you a move. Confirm the online tuition rate before you count on that savings.
What You Keep and What You Give Up at a Lower Price
Every school here graduates at least half its students, but the range is real, from 50% to 65%. The University of North Florida has the highest rate on the list at 65%, with in-state tuition and fees of $5,964. BYU-Idaho and the University of North Georgia sit at the 50% floor.
Earnings vary far more than tuition does. The College Scorecard median for political science graduates runs from $34,484 at the University of West Florida to $61,971 at Kennesaw State. Six of the 10 programs report medians above $54,000. A median is a midpoint, so your own pay will depend on the job you take.
Program size is worth a look too. Florida Atlantic awarded 132 political science bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, while West Florida awarded 15 and Western Carolina awarded 23. Ask each department how often its upper-level electives run, because a course offered once a year can be harder to fit into your plan.
Questions About Paying for a Political Science Degree
Which Political Science Program on This List Costs the Least In-State?

What Is the Lowest-Cost Option for Out-of-State Students?
On published 2024–25 figures, BYU-Idaho at $4,800 and Western Carolina at $8,630. On campus, BYU-Idaho charges non-members twice the member rate, $5,088 a semester for 2026–27. North Carolina raised Western Carolina’s nonresident tuition to $3,500 a semester for students who first enroll in Summer 2026 or later.
Does a Lower Price Mean a Lower Graduation Rate?
Not on this list. Graduation rates run from 50% to 65% and don’t rise or fall with price. Florida Atlantic has the third-lowest in-state figure and a 63% rate, and the University of North Florida, eighth by price, graduates 65%.
Does the Published Tuition Include Housing and Books?
No. It’s annual tuition and required fees before aid. Housing, meals, books and travel are extra. At Western Carolina, a residence hall alone runs $3,263 to $3,785 a semester for 2026–27.

Do These Programs Require a Research Methods Course?
Many do. Kennesaw State requires Research Methods, and the University of North Florida requires both Research Design and Research Analysis for Political Science. Check where the methods course falls in the plan, especially if you’re transferring in credits.
Can I Start at a Community College and Transfer In?
Yes. Florida Atlantic says lower-division requirements may be completed through an A.A. degree from any Florida public college, university or community college. Ask any school on this list for its transfer guide so your first two years count toward the major.
