Sociology Undergraduate Program
Yale gives its sociology majors six pathways to the B.A.: the Standard Major, Economy and Society, Health and Society, Inequality, Race, and Society, Data and Society, or a student-designed plan. Whichever you choose, the senior project comes in two sizes. The non-intensive route adds one more sociology seminar and a one-credit senior essay, which is a literature review on a topic you pick. The intensive route is a yearlong thesis of original research that includes research design, data collection and analysis, and it typically runs 50 to 60 pages. Any member of the Yale teaching faculty can advise it. The department awarded 20 degrees in 2023–24.

Sociology Major
Ten courses make up Wesleyan’s sociology major: three foundations courses (SOC151, SOC202 and SOC212), four topical sociology courses, and three more topical courses that can come from other departments, study abroad or transfer credit if your advisor approves them. You need to have taken at least three courses in the department, including SOC202 or SOC212, before senior year. Strong students can apply to the two-semester Honors Thesis Seminar, where a faculty advisor and weekly meetings with other thesis writers guide an original project. Education-in-the-field credit is available with a prospectus and professional guidance. Wesleyan conferred 22 sociology degrees in 2023–24.

Sociology
Southern Connecticut State builds its sociology BA around an 18-credit core: Introduction to Sociology, Social Science Statistics, Methods of Social Research and Applied Social Theory, plus one diversity course and one capstone. For diversity you pick Racial and Ethnic Relations, Sociology of Gender or Social Inequality in the U.S. The capstone is a sociology seminar, departmental honors or a sociology internship. Another 18 credits are sociology electives. Seniors with a 3.0 GPA and 90 credits can apply for an accelerated pathway that earns dual credit toward a graduate program. At 52 degrees awarded in 2023–24, it is one of the larger programs on its state page.

Bachelor of Arts in Sociology
Quinnipiac puts the applied work in plain view: a course called From College to Career, then Internship in the Community, then a Senior Seminar. The internship is one of the program’s capstone experiences. Before those you take an introductory course, a social inequalities course, Research Methods and one advanced methods course chosen from sociology, anthropology or math. Eighteen credits of sociology electives follow, and nine of them can count toward a Social Work and Community Services concentration that adds an advanced internship in the field. The degree is 120 credits and includes a modern language through the 102 level. That path produced 17 graduates in 2023–24.

Ph.D. in Sociology
Yale front-loads its sociology PhD: 12 courses in the first two years, made up of four required courses and eight electives, one of which is a departmental workshop taken for credit. Year two centers on a solo-authored research paper of around 30 pages, due May 5, written under two faculty members. In year three you write a field exam essay from a reading list of about 50 items, then defend a dissertation prospectus. Teaching is part of the plan too, since students teach in each semester of the third and fourth years. Work is organized around clusters such as comparative and historical sociology and health, medicine and biosocial interactions. Yale conferred 3 sociology doctorates in 2023–24.

Ph.D. in Sociology
If you enter UConn’s sociology PhD without a sociology master’s, you earn one on the way, since the department follows the thesis track and expects most students to finish the MA in two years. The master’s covers a year-long proseminar, the logic of social research, quantitative and qualitative methods and core theorists, plus a thesis defense. The doctoral stage adds Quantitative Methods II, Qualitative Methods II, 12 credits of elective seminars and 15 dissertation credits. A general exam, usually covering two areas, serves as the bridge to the dissertation. The Ph.D. typically takes about four years after the MA. UConn conferred 3 in 2023–24.
