Six Rhode Island colleges awarded sociology degrees in 2023–24, for 90 total. Two are public and four are private nonprofit, spread across Kingston, Providence, Smithfield, and Newport.

6 schools in Rhode Island awarded sociology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 843 bachelor’s programs nationwide.
A.B. in Sociology
Brown’s sociology department runs three routes under one roof. The A.B. concentration has required introductory, methods and theory courses, electives across several areas, and a senior seminar that leads to a senior thesis or capstone project analyzing data. If you want heavier data work, the Sc.B. in Social Analysis and Research is STEM-designated, and the Organizational Studies track focuses on nonprofit, for-profit and governmental organizations. Certificates in Migration Studies and Engaged Scholarship add community-based or multidisciplinary options. Brown awarded 29 degrees in 2023–24.

Sociology Major
The major at Providence College comes to ten three-credit courses, taught in a department that also houses anthropology. The department wants you doing sociology, not only reading it, and points to original scholarship and internships in government, nonprofits, business and education. Majors can join the college’s chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta and present a poster at the Eastern Sociological Society Conference or the college’s annual Celebration of Scholarship and Creativity. Course topics run across stratification, marginalization and institutions, with attention to race, class, gender and culture. The 2023–24 count was 13 degrees.

B.A. in Sociology
Rhode Island’s B.A. pairs classroom work with fieldwork and travel. The department runs experiential learning programs abroad in Italy and Mexico and at home in Rhode Island, tied to globalization, multiculturalism and juvenile justice. Faculty expertise covers gender inequality, immigration, crime and delinquency, labor markets, families and care work, reproduction and aging, poverty, and international development, so your electives can follow whichever of those draws you. The department says the degree builds the ability to make empirically based arguments, collect and analyze data, and communicate effectively. URI awarded 12 degrees in 2023–24.

Sociology and Anthropology
Bryant sorts its Sociology and Anthropology major around three themes: health and well-being, sustainability, and justice and society. You use qualitative, quantitative and visual methods on community questions such as social determinants of health and how well community-based organizations work, sometimes in partnership with those organizations. Sample courses include a sociological look at mental health, covering culture, identity and inequality. Faculty bring students into original research in the lab and field, and the college pairs the humanities and social sciences major with a business minor. Eleven degrees were awarded in 2023–24.

Sociology Bachelor's Degree
Rhode Island College teaches research as a hands-on skill: you design projects and data collection instruments, gather data in different ways, and analyze it with qualitative and quantitative methods. The Sociology Department also runs a justice studies major, so doubling up, or pairing a major with a minor in sociology, justice studies or aging studies, is common. Majors can add service learning, field work, research or internships, and a Departmental Honors Program supports more in-depth research. Topics reach crime and criminal justice, politics and society, aging and law, and the program lists pre-law advising. Seven students earned the degree in 2023–24.

Sociology and Anthropology Major
Salve Regina requires only 14 courses for this major, which leaves room for a double major or a minor in areas such as cultural and historic preservation, environmental studies, global studies or social work. The curriculum takes a global, comparative approach to markets, ethnicity, race, gender and religion. Your capstone is a research-driven project that takes a global issue to the local level and ends in written analysis and public presentations. A summer field school walks you through an archaeological dig, from research design through surveying, excavating, cataloging and analyzing artifacts, and internships are another option. The program awarded 5 degrees in 2023–24.

1 school in Rhode Island awarded research doctorates in sociology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost.
Brown's Sociology PhD combines theory and methods with multivariate analysis, research design, and measurement. Students complete an MA thesis, teach for two semesters, and pass preliminary exams in two approved areas before dissertation work and oral defense. The department permits outside-department courses and specialization areas with graduate committee approval, making interdisciplinary design possible without turning the doctorate into an unstructured elective plan. A prospective applicant should be ready for both original research and documented classroom teaching, since each is a formal element of Brown's program.
