Anthropology programs in Texas differ in how they combine research, practical work and preparation for transfer. Texas A&M’s BS requires quantitative methods and a field or laboratory course, while South Texas College’s associate plan covers physical anthropology, archaeology and cultural anthropology. At graduate level, Rice requires extended fieldwork, and Texas State and UT San Antonio offer alternatives to a thesis. These ten featured programs give you specific course and project requirements to compare across degree levels.

3 schools in Texas awarded anthropology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 405 bachelor’s programs nationwide. This section shows the top 3 of 18 eligible programs at this level.
UT Austin’s Anthropology BA has a 33-hour major: four introductions cover biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, archaeology, and culture and communication. Upper-division requirements then ask for theory, methods, and a culture or geographic-area course, rather than leaving specialization entirely to free electives. The College of Liberal Arts also requires a minor or certificate under recent catalogs. For students interested in archaeological practice, UT offers a separate integrated BA/MA in Applied Archaeology; that route requires its own application and should not be confused with automatic progression from the ordinary BA.

Anthropology BS
Texas A&M’s Anthropology BS pairs statistics with quantitative anthropology or quantitative ethnographic methods. The plan also requires a course with a field or laboratory component; choices include artifact conservation, human osteology, museum studies and field research. Additional science electives support the BS, while theory can focus on anthropology or archaeology. Writing is another fixed part of the major: students must complete two departmental writing courses, so writing courses from another department cannot simply replace that requirement.

Anthropology, B.A.
UNT’s anthropology BA focuses on cultural anthropology and leans applied, with upper-level courses such as Environmental Anthropology; Social Justice, Inequality, and the City; and Design Anthropology. The 39-hour major requires Introduction to Anthropology, Culture and Society, Applied Anthropology, Anthropological Field Methods and Development of Anthropological Thought, then 24 hours of electives with set numbers at the 3000 and 4000 levels. You can add certificates in Applied Anthropology, Social Justice Studies, Social Science and Popular Culture, or Medical Anthropology, and a department-led international field school offers hands-on experience. UNT is third on the Texas page, with 44 degrees awarded in 2023–24.

2 schools in Texas have a separately admitting master’s route confirmed on an official school page and reported anthropology master’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 144 master’s programs nationwide. Texas State’s Anthropology MA offers thesis and non-thesis routes across archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology. Core seminars span those three areas, with anthropological statistics required for students in archaeology and biological anthropology. Additional subdiscipline coursework and electives let students develop a research specialty; approved electives can include courses outside the department. Research settings include the Forensic Anthropology Center, the Center for Archaeological Studies and dedicated laboratory space. Compare the final project requirements of the two routes when discussing a plan with the graduate advisor.

UT San Antonio’s Anthropology MA is a 33-credit degree with two endings. Thesis students pass a comprehensive examination framed as a detailed research proposal and complete six thesis credits; non-thesis students take a written exam and produce an approved internship or special-project report. Both plans begin with archaeology, cultural anthropology, and biological anthropology courses plus a dedicated methods class. The department also offers GIS, grant writing, and laboratory training. The form of the final work is therefore a real choice between original thesis research and a documented applied project.

3 schools in Texas awarded research doctorates in anthropology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 3 of 6 eligible programs at this level.
Anthropology PhD
UT Austin’s Anthropology PhD expects breadth across subfields as well as an individual research focus. Students normally demonstrate competence through at least three core courses, including one in their primary subdiscipline, and complete organized anthropology coursework beyond activities such as dissertation research or supervised teaching. Language preparation must be relevant to the research, with competence assessed through an approved method. A supervisor may request a waiver when a foreign language is unnecessary for the project. Doctoral entry requires a formal application, including for continuing UT master’s students.

Anthropology PhD
Rice’s sociocultural Anthropology PhD route requires courses in anthropological ideas, ethnographic methods, proposal writing and pedagogy. Students prepare an undergraduate syllabus for committee approval as part of their teaching preparation. Before candidacy, the committee also evaluates two qualifying examinations or essays and the proposed research. Extended fieldwork follows, with regular reports to the thesis committee before the final thesis and defense. An annual progress report and faculty discussion provide another recurring assessment before students reach candidacy.

Anthropology PhD
Texas A&M’s Anthropology PhD includes a nautical archaeology specialization alongside archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology. Research connects those areas through themes such as migration, diet and nutrition, ecology and evolution, and technology and material culture. The department describes field projects on land and at sea, plus laboratory work in ancient DNA, stable isotopes and artifact research. Doctoral planning involves a faculty advisory committee that includes an outside member, followed by preliminary examinations, a research proposal and dissertation requirements.

Anthropology, Associate of Arts Degree
Austin Community College’s Anthropology AA is the first two years of a bachelor’s in anthropology, laid out semester by semester for transfer. The plan includes Cultural Anthropology, Physical Anthropology with its lab, Introduction to Archaeology and Academic Cooperative in Anthropology, alongside English, history, government, math, science and language requirements, for 60 to 61 hours in all. A footnote warns that Introduction to Archaeology does not transfer to Texas State University, so check your target school’s catalog and talk with an ACC anthropology instructor. ACC also offers an Archaeology associate of science. Eight students completed the AA in 2023–24, first on the Texas page.

Anthropology AA
South Texas College’s Anthropology AA requires physical anthropology, archaeology and cultural anthropology, plus a choice between World Cultures and General Anthropology. Supporting electives let you add sociology, minority studies, psychological statistics or world civilizations. The learning outcomes cover human evolution, cultural diversity and the interpretation of excavated material. Its catalog identifies a fully online option. When arranging the degree plan, keep the field-of-study courses separate from the general education core: the catalog does not allow the same courses to satisfy both groups.

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national anthropology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Texas’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. This page features up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Master’s lists weigh graduate tuition (25%), research activity (25%), program reputation (30%), and master’s degrees awarded (20%). Doctoral lists weigh research activity (35%), program reputation (35%), and doctoral degrees awarded (30%). Associate lists weigh graduation rate (30%), published tuition (25%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (20%). Master’s lists require an official school source confirming a separately admitting master’s route. How these scores work.

Its thesis option instead includes a proposal-based examination and thesis research. Compare the final work with a graduate advisor before choosing a route.
The BS plan requires one approved course with a field or laboratory component. Options include archaeological artifact conservation, field research, advanced museum studies, human osteology and other specialist subjects. The methods sequence also requires statistics and quantitative anthropology or quantitative ethnographic methods. A required practical course does not mean every student must attend the same field school.
