The programs below make different choices about that preparation. A broad major can still require field experience, while a named concentration can add a tightly sequenced research project. Use the school profiles to compare the work you'll actually complete, then check the full degree requirements around the anthropology major.
Compare Anthropology BA and BS Requirements
The letters after the degree don't describe a universal curriculum. At Florida State, the BA and BS share the stated anthropology major, including introductory archaeology, cultural and biological anthropology, and the history of the discipline. The university's wider degree requirements still matter when you compare those routes.
Maryland makes a different distinction: its BS adds mathematics and science, while the BA uses adviser-selected supporting coursework. UCLA also adds life and physical science, mathematics and statistics to the BS preparation. Read the supporting-course lists alongside the anthropology requirements. That comparison tells you whether switching degree labels changes your actual preparation or mainly the surrounding university requirements.
Look for Research Methods You Can Use
A methods requirement is most useful when you know what you'll practice. San Diego State lets students choose methods courses across archaeological, biological and cultural approaches. Florida includes statistics and an experiential requirement. Those structures ask different questions of you: which evidence will you learn to collect, and where will you apply that learning?
Use the comparison below to separate a required research sequence from an optional experience. A course named in a catalog can be a requirement, an elective or part of a particular track. Before applying, mark those differences on a sample degree plan so an attractive opportunity doesn't accidentally become the basis of your entire decision.
| Program | Published Structure | Planning Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Florida | Statistics, experiential learning and a capstone | Choose an approved experience that supports your interests. |
| BYU Cultural Emphasis | Research design, field project and senior thesis in sequence | Plan the field project before scheduling the thesis. |
| UCF | General Track or Methods and Practice Track | Match the track to your format and hands-on goals. |
| UNC Chapel Hill | Theory and a capstone, with a limit on field-oriented major credit | Balance field experience with the rest of the major. |
Plan Anthropology Fieldwork Around the Actual Requirement
Fieldwork can mean sustained ethnographic research as well as excavation. BYU's cultural emphasis requires a faculty-recognized field-school project followed by a senior thesis. Its local fieldwork exception needs approval from the entire faculty. If you need to remain close to home, that approval rule belongs in your decision before you commit to the emphasis.
Florida permits an approved anthropology field school or study abroad to satisfy its experience requirement. UCF places additional structured field or lab work and a high-impact experience in its Methods and Practice Track, while online students follow the General Track. Ask about the specific activity, location, supervision and term. An online degree label or a department's field-school page won't settle those questions by itself.
Choose the Kind of Work You Want to Finish With
The end of the major shows how a department expects you to bring its courses together. UNC Chapel Hill requires a capstone seminar and a theoretical-perspectives course, with an additional honors project and thesis route for eligible students. BYU's cultural emphasis builds its thesis into the required research sequence. A required thesis and an optional honors thesis are different commitments.
Think about what you'd want to explain in a graduate application or an interview: the question you investigated, the evidence you used, the limits of your conclusions and the writing you produced. Compare the final assignment with that goal. You can also use the anthropology career guide to connect your planned methods and project to a specific kind of work.
Compare the Degree Plan Alongside the Ranking Score
The comparison score uses institutional and degree-record measures described in the ranking methodology. It doesn't measure how well a department's fieldwork or supervision fits your interests. The undergraduate tuition and fees on a card are schoolwide annual figures, so ask for a plan that accounts for your residency, remaining courses and any research travel.
For transfer planning, distinguish university credit from credit that satisfies the anthropology major. At UNC Chapel Hill, no more than six hours of field-oriented coursework count toward the major. That is a useful reminder to check how an internship or field school applies before arranging it. Bring course descriptions and a proposed specialization to advising, then compare the remaining methods, theory and capstone sequence.

Questions About Anthropology Bachelor’s Degrees
Is an Anthropology BA Less Scientific Than a BS?
Compare the actual school requirements. Maryland and UCLA add mathematics and science to their BS preparation, while Florida State publishes a shared anthropology major for its BA and BS. A BA can still include biological anthropology, statistics and research methods. Choose the course plan that supports your intended work.
Do Anthropology Bachelor’s Programs Require Statistics?
Some do. Florida includes statistics in the BA, while other programs organize methods through choices across subfields. Check both the major and the wider degree requirements. A statistics course and a course on interviewing or archaeological analysis teach different ways of working with evidence.
Does Every Anthropology Major Require a Field School?
Read the exact track. BYU's cultural emphasis requires a field-school project, with a specifically approved local exception. Florida allows an approved field school or study abroad to satisfy its experiential requirement. UCF's General Track differs from its Methods and Practice Track. Those arrangements shouldn't be treated as interchangeable.
Can I Complete an Anthropology Bachelor’s Online?
UCF identifies its General Track for online students. Compare that track's requirements with the campus options before choosing a format. The online anthropology guide explains additional programs and the fieldwork rules that can affect remote study.

Will a Bachelor’s Degree Qualify Me as an Anthropologist?
BLS identifies at least a master's degree as typical entry preparation for anthropologists and archeologists. Some bachelor's graduates enter field or laboratory technician and research-assistant work with relevant experience. Use a particular job's requirements to decide whether your next step is employment, additional practical experience or graduate study.

How Should I Compare Anthropology Programs as a Transfer Student?
Start with the remaining major requirements, especially methods and the final project. Ask how your previous courses apply to those requirements and whether your chosen experience earns major credit. UNC Chapel Hill's limit on field-oriented coursework illustrates why accepted university credit and a completed anthropology requirement need separate checks.
