The Anthropology Major
After a pre-major sequence, UNM students pick a B.A. or B.S. and one of four concentrations: archaeology, evolutionary anthropology, human biology, or sociocultural and linguistic anthropology. The B.A. makes you finish the core sequence in your own concentration and the core of a second one, with a course in the third, so even a specialist leaves with range. The B.S. adds an advanced lab course or summer field school, six credits of math and a science minor. Archaeology majors can use the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology’s collections for research, and the department teaches lab methods in lithics, ceramics and geoarchaeology. Forty-one degrees awarded in 2023–24 make it one of the larger options on the New Mexico page.

Anthropology - Bachelor of Arts
New Mexico State’s major is 36 credits, 27 of them upper-division, and it spans the natural and social sciences. The core is cultural anthropology, archaeological method and theory, biological anthropology, anthropological theory and a professionalism course that works as the capstone. You can take the three subfield courses in whatever order suits your interests. A one-year foreign language proficiency is part of the degree, and the department also offers a separate BA in Anthropology with a culture and language concentration. Minors in archaeology, medical anthropology, religious studies and sustainability pair with the major. Eleven students completed the degree in 2023–24.

2 schools in New Mexico have a separately admitting master’s route confirmed on an official school page and reported anthropology master’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 144 master’s programs nationwide. You can apply to these master’s programs without entering a Ph.D. program.
New Mexico State’s Anthropology MA pairs Issues in Anthropological Practice with a seminar in theory, then leaves a large elective block for a chosen area. Its graduate handbook sets out both thesis and non-thesis endings: the latter can use an internship or special research problems rather than a thesis. The 36-credit plan permits a limited amount of coursework outside anthropology. This is a program to discuss with a prospective adviser early, since the final project and the eight electives should form a coherent plan rather than a collection of available graduate classes.

New Mexico asks Anthropology graduate applicants to select Archaeology, Ethnology, Evolutionary Anthropology, or Public Archaeology and to name faculty and a research area or topic. Its graduate admissions page lists both MA and MS pathways, along with the PhD; the public archaeology option is identified as the master’s-oriented choice for archaeologists whose immediate goal is a master’s credential. Ethnology applicants submit a writing sample. Those application requirements make subfield fit explicit before admission, especially for applicants deciding between archaeological research and practice-oriented public archaeology.

1 school in New Mexico awarded research doctorates in anthropology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost.
Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology
Each UNM doctoral student applies to one of three concentrations: archaeology, evolutionary anthropology, or sociocultural and linguistic anthropology, with a master’s degree available on the way. The PhD asks for 48 credit hours of coursework plus 18 dissertation hours, built from 12 to 15 hours of core courses and electives tied to your research. In your first semester you take a professional development course, and archaeology and evolutionary anthropology students complete a research proposals course before the dissertation proposal. Before candidacy you also show competence in either one second language and one technical skill, two languages other than English, or two technical skills. Three doctorates were awarded in 2023–24.

You start with Introduction to Anthropology, then work through composition, public speaking, a laboratory science, a modern language and math. The catalog points transfer students toward the University of New Mexico, whose anthropology program has three concentrations: archeology, ethnology and evolutionary anthropology. You can study part-time or full-time and start in any term, and you buy your own textbooks and safety equipment for the archeology lab. CNM awarded 20 anthropology associate degrees in 2023–24.
