Sociology PhD Programs in Illinois

5 schools in Illinois awarded research doctorates in sociology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 5 of 6 eligible programs at this level.

  1. 1

    University of Chicago

    Sociology PhD

    Chicago Private nonprofit

94.7 Comparison Score No. 7 Nationally

Chicago's Sociology PhD begins with first-year exams and a qualifying paper, then moves into two special-field requirements. A second-year writing seminar and third-year dissertation-proposal seminar structure the transition from broad training to an independent project. Students entering in autumn 2025 or later follow the division's teaching requirement; earlier cohorts had a separate four-assistantship rule. The department expects a proposal defense by spring of year four. The unusually explicit milestone calendar is helpful for judging whether a developing research question fits the pace of the program.

Northwestern's Sociology PhD makes fieldwork a required methods course and adds a two-course applied-regression sequence. Students also take a seminar on race, racism, and resistance and a teaching seminar. Their second-year paper must be suitable for publication, followed by a Special Fields Paper for candidacy at the end of year three. This is a useful program to consider when a project needs both qualitative field evidence and quantitative analysis, with explicit checkpoints before the dissertation. The catalog lists an outside-department elective as part of the degree.

UIC admits students to this program only as PhD candidates, so the master’s coursework is part of the plan rather than a separate terminal degree. That first phase covers two statistics courses, two research methods courses, Sociology of Inequality, classical and contemporary theory and a proseminar. Doctoral work then adds a research methods seminar, a colloquium on college teaching and three more graduate seminars. The preliminary examination has two parts, a written exam in a major specialty area and an original research paper submitted for publication, followed by a dissertation proposal defense. UIC awarded 8 sociology doctorates in 2023–24.

Illinois keeps its sociology PhD small, and the catalog ties that to a high faculty-student ratio. Everyone takes a small core of theory and methods courses, two semesters of a professionalization seminar and five further 500-level substantive courses, and joins a professional development workshop in every term of residence. Total coursework reaches 72 hours if you enter with a bachelor’s degree and 48 if you arrive with a master’s. Then come specialty examinations, a dissertation proposal and the final dissertation. The department also treats teaching experience as an important part of graduate training and does not accept applications to its M.A. program. UIUC awarded 2 sociology doctorates in 2023–24.
