Chicago's suggested tracks are voluntary, Northwestern requires a concentration, and Illinois State includes a senior thesis in its regular major. Loyola's BA and BS divide ethnographic and biological coursework differently. The ten featured degrees also include doctoral programs with distinct methods, language, teaching, and examination requirements. Check subfield access early: SIU Carbondale currently is not accepting doctoral applications in sociocultural or linguistic anthropology.

5 schools in Illinois awarded anthropology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 405 bachelor’s programs nationwide. This section shows the top 5 of 15 eligible programs at this level.
Anthropology BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences
Illinois Urbana-Champaign's general anthropology major asks you to connect research training with a senior project. You can fulfill the research or service-learning requirement through options such as stone-tool analysis, human osteology, ethnographic methods, or museum work. The senior capstone offers several approved formats: a thesis, an independent-research seminar, or a portfolio and report tied to an internship or study abroad. The department also offers concentrations in archaeology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural and linguistic anthropology; each has its own course plan.

Anthropology BA or BS
Loyola Chicago's anthropology degrees share foundations in human origins, cultural study, and linguistic anthropology, but allocate later courses differently. The BA requires two ethnographic and two theoretical courses, with options such as migration, museum cultures, human rights, and urban anthropology. The BS requires Principles of Archaeology and more biological-anthropology coursework, with choices including human osteology, primatology, and dental anthropology. Comparing those course groups helps you decide whether cultural interpretation or biological and archaeological study should occupy more of your major.

Anthropology BA
Chicago's Anthropology BA combines a required theory course and a methods choice with room to build your own topical focus. Methods options include ethnographic research, bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology, or an archaeology laboratory practicum. The department suggests tracks such as medical anthropology, human rights, and science and technology studies, but those tracks are voluntary and carry no separate course requirements. If you attend another institution's field school, both the College and the anthropology director must approve credit toward the major.

BA with a Major in Anthropology
The UIC major opens with World Cultures: Introduction to Social Anthropology, Introduction to Archaeology and Human Evolution, so three main subfields show up in your first two years. The required writing course comes later: Writing Culture, which also counts as your Writing-in-the-Discipline credit. Six more anthropology courses make up the rest, at least two at the 300 or 400 level, and if you lean sociocultural, biological or archaeological you plan those electives with the program advisor. The recommended plan sets aside a final-semester slot for independent study or honors research. UIC awarded 25 degrees in 2023–24, among the larger totals on its state page.

Anthropology BA or BS
Illinois State builds a senior thesis into its regular Anthropology BA and BS sequence. The required plan also includes courses in biological anthropology, archaeology, language and culture, cultural anthropology, and the history of anthropological theory. A careers course also belongs to the required plan. Electives let you add practical work through an archaeology laboratory, cultural fieldwork methods, archaeological field school, or a professional internship. Those experiences are choices within the curriculum, so you can shape the degree around the kind of evidence you want to investigate.

5 schools in Illinois awarded research doctorates in anthropology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 5 of 5 eligible programs at this level.
Chicago organizes its Anthropology PhD around a master's research paper, a qualifying oral examination, and a dissertation proposal hearing. The program includes 18 courses before candidacy, with Introduction to Chicago Anthropology and Proposal Preparation taken pass/fail. You'll develop a reading list in your theoretical and ethnographic areas with your advisory committee as preparation for the qualifying examination. The master's paper develops under faculty supervision, giving you an earlier substantial writing project before the dissertation research plan takes shape.

PhD in Anthropology
Illinois offers Anthropology PhD training in archaeology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural and linguistic anthropology. The department's current graduate requirements differ by path: archaeology students take courses in archaeological theory and proposal writing; biological students complete upper-level courses with several faculty plus methods training; sociocultural students take social theory and ethnographic methods. All students study research ethics and demonstrate a language or research skill relevant to their work. There is no standalone terminal MA, so the doctoral track is the program to examine when comparing Illinois graduate options.

Northwestern admits anthropology graduate students who intend to complete the PhD, with an MA awarded as an intermediate degree. Its first-year work introduces the four fields and helps students define a subfield and regional research question; a second-year qualifying paper follows. Students then develop and defend a dissertation proposal, conduct fieldwork, and complete a dissertation and final oral examination. At least one academic quarter of instructional work is required. That teaching requirement and the staged research papers give applicants tangible milestones to compare with programs organized chiefly around comprehensive exams.

Anthropology PhD
SIU Carbondale's Anthropology PhD currently is not accepting applications in sociocultural or linguistic anthropology. Applicants should check their intended subfield before planning around its doctoral curriculum. The program expects a master's-equivalent degree and requires two committee-approved research tools, which can include languages, statistics, or GIS. You'll complete written and oral comprehensive exams, gain teaching experience, and develop an approved dissertation prospectus. The Center for Archaeological Investigations also offers research and assistantship connections for students whose projects and skills fit its work.

Anthropology PhD
UIC's Anthropology PhD begins with shared training across social and cultural theory, archaeological theory and methods, and human evolution. The required core and graduate seminar must be completed in the first two semesters, establishing breadth before the dissertation becomes your main focus. You'll also take a written preliminary examination and demonstrate competence in the language needed for your field research. With graduate-adviser consultation, you can add an interdepartmental concentration such as Black Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, or Museum and Exhibition Studies.

The undergraduate project is a useful place to start. Illinois Urbana-Champaign allows an approved capstone in several forms, including a thesis, research seminar, or internship or study-abroad portfolio. Illinois State requires a senior thesis and offers fieldwork, laboratory, and internship electives. Chicago requires theory and methods but treats suggested topical tracks as voluntary. These differences affect whether your research direction takes shape through a prescribed project, a concentration, or your elective choices.
Loyola and Northwestern make different course distinctions within the major. Loyola's BA includes two ethnographic and two theoretical courses, while its BS builds in Principles of Archaeology and more biological anthropology. At Northwestern, every major takes a research course, and Human Biology students must choose the human-biology methods course. Biological Anthropology and Human Biology students also meet the formal-studies requirement through statistics. Read those requirements beside your preferred research subject before choosing a credential or concentration.
The doctoral programs organize preparation around different milestones. UIC requires its shared theory and methods core in the first two semesters. Urbana-Champaign separates subfield requirements while retaining research ethics and language or skills training. Northwestern uses a second-year qualifying paper and requires instructional work, while Chicago combines substantial coursework with a qualifying oral examination and proposal hearing. At SIU Carbondale, students select research tools with their committee, but its current sociocultural and linguistic admissions pause limits who can pursue that plan.
These are BLS median annual wages for Illinois and the United States from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. A median is the midpoint among workers in the occupation, from new hires to senior staff, so it is not a starting salary for a new graduate. The 10th–90th percentile range shows what the middle 80% of workers earn in the state.
