How We Rank Psychology Programs in Illinois

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national psychology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Illinois’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. We feature up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Doctoral lists weigh research activity (35%), program reputation (35%), and doctoral degrees awarded (30%). Methodology and data sources.

Psychology Licensure in Illinois

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), Division of Professional Regulation, advised by the Clinical Psychologists Licensing and Disciplinary Board licenses psychologists in Illinois. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology does not by itself qualify you to practice as a psychologist.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP)

Degree
Doctorate in clinical, school or counseling psychology from a regionally accredited institution. Programs accredited by the APA or PCSAS, or approved by the National Register of Health Service Psychologists, are accepted. Other routes exist for equivalent psychology doctorates, or doctorates that are psychological in nature, that include one course in each of 7 content areas (225 ILCS 15/10(3)(b) and (c)).
Exam
EPPP (Part 1 only) from ASPPB. IDFPR approves the applicant for the exam when the application is submitted. Passing the American Board of Professional Psychology exam in clinical or counseling psychology is accepted in place of the EPPP.
Supervised Experience
2 years of satisfactory supervised experience: one year must be an internship and one must be postdoctoral. A year is at least 1,750 hours over at least 50 weeks (35 hours per week full time). The internship must be at least 1,750 hours completed within 24 months. Rules also require a practicum of at least 400 hours that is wholly separate from the 2 years. Supervision must be under a licensed clinical psychologist, with at least 1 hour per week of face-to-face individual supervision. At least 50% of the required postdoctoral hours must be direct service.
Practice
Independent

The Illinois psychology board does not issue a separate master’s-level psychology credential. Master’s graduates who want to provide therapy usually pursue a counseling or marriage and family therapy license from a different board.

Illinois licenses psychologists only at the doctoral level, as Licensed Clinical Psychologists. The IDFPR psychology page lists no master’s-level credential. It lists Clinical Psychologist, Prescribing Psychologist (plus the related Controlled Substance license and Clinical Rotation Program) and Psychologist CE Sponsor. Illinois clinical psychologists are covered by the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) under 225 ILCS 15/11.11, in effect since January 1, 2020.

Requirements summarized from the board’s official pages. Confirm the current rules with the board before you choose a graduate program.
