Compare 10 sociology programs in Michigan, grouped by degree level. University of Michigan leads the bachelor’s list. Each section starts with its highest-scoring eligible programs, so you can focus on the degree you plan to earn.

4 schools in Michigan awarded sociology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 843 bachelor’s programs nationwide. This section shows the top 4 of 20 eligible programs at this level.
At Michigan, you declare sociology after passing one introductory course (SOC 100, 102, 300, or 302), then complete 33 credits of SOC work at the 200 level or above. Three courses form the core of that work: statistics (SOC 210, STATS 250, or STATS 280), Research Methods (SOC 310), and Sociological Theory (SOC 305), and you take methods and theory on the Ann Arbor campus. At least fourteen elective credits sit at the 300 level or higher. You can add one optional sub-major in Law, Justice, and Social Change, Sociology of Health and Medicine, or Sociology and Social Work. The honors route runs three semesters, starting with SOC 497 in the winter of junior year and finishing with a thesis written through SOC 498 and 499.

Sociology
Michigan State majors can go beyond the classroom through three numbered courses: SOC 496 for independent study, SOC 497 for supervised individual research, and SOC 498 for internship credit with a public, private or non-profit organization. Each needs department approval. Up to 12 credits of independent study and up to 12 of internship, field experience and practicum work can count toward the degree, with a combined ceiling of 20. SOC 497 and SOC 498 can also satisfy the College of Social Science experiential learning credit. With 112 degrees awarded in 2023–24, this is one of the larger options on its Michigan state page.

Sociology B.A., B.S.
Grand Valley splits sociology into two majors. The B.S. emphasizes research and data analysis, while the B.A. emphasizes foreign language skills and the humanities, so your choice depends on whether you want to lean on statistics or on language study. Majors can join the Sociology Club, and the Theta chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society, recognizes scholarship. One major earned course credit for a data analytics internship and went on to a position with the Urban League of West Michigan. The Rynbrandt Endowed Sociology Scholarship supports junior and senior year costs. GVSU awarded 11 degrees in 2023–24.

3 schools in Michigan awarded research doctorates in sociology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 3 of 3 eligible programs at this level.
Michigan's Sociology PhD requires a research practicum, and students choose its method: qualitative research, comparative and historical methods, quantitative work, or survey methodology. The first year pairs theory with a two-term statistics sequence; a course outside sociology is also required. That design lets a student build practical method depth while keeping a defined interdisciplinary connection. Michigan's graduate workshops, including one on urban and community sociology, provide places to present work in progress to faculty and peers at different stages of the degree.

Ph.D. in Sociology
Wayne State’s Ph.D. trains you to theorize from several sociological perspectives and analyze with a range of methodologies. Advanced training centers on three specialty areas: race, ethnicity and gender, sociology of health and illness, and global, transnational and comparative sociology. The department lists a plan of work, a dissertation prospectus and a final dissertation defense among its forms and policies, and the Ph.D. student handbook holds the specifics. Questions go to the graduate director. Only 1 degree was awarded in 2023–24, so this is a very small program.
