Choices include Doing Archaeology: Essential Theory and Methods, How Humans Evolved, and Language in Society, and at least one course must be at the 400 level. You can sharpen the focus with a submajor in archaeology, culture and media, medical anthropology, or politics, law, and economy. With a 3.4 GPA you can pursue an honors thesis built on museum collections, primate or skeletal research, or participant observation, and it ends in a senior poster session.

Anthropology (B.A. or B.S.)
At Michigan State you choose between a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of science in anthropology, and both start the same way: one introductory course each in cultural anthropology, archaeology and physical anthropology, plus a methods course picked from four options. From there you add a culture-area course, a thematic or analytical course, and four electives, three of them at the 300 level or above. The major ends with a capstone that also meets the university’s Tier II writing requirement. Roughly 30 credits stay open for a second major, a minor, a language or a specialization.

Anthropology (B.A.)
Wayne State’s anthropology B.A. covers all four subfields through its core: biological anthropology, archaeology, sociocultural anthropology and language and culture, along with a history of anthropology course. You then take a 4-credit anthropological methods course and finish with a capstone seminar, which must be taken in residence. Nine more credits go to anthropology electives. If you hold a 3.3 GPA, you can pursue the honors track, which adds an honors thesis written in senior year. Seniors can also apply for accelerated graduate enrollment. With 24 degrees awarded in 2023–24, this is one of the larger anthropology majors on its state page.

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Anthropology
Grand Valley lets you earn this major as either a B.A. or a B.S., and the choice changes the extras: the B.A. asks for third-semester language proficiency, while the B.S. adds applied statistics and a quantitative or lab course. Both share a core that runs from peoples and cultures and human origins through anthropological theory, and both require one methods course in biological, linguistic, ethnographic or archaeological research. You also complete a practical experience, either field techniques and lab methods, a field experience abroad or a career-service practicum, and close with a capstone called Practicing Anthropology.

Anthropology Major (ANTJ)
Western Michigan requires at least 34 hours of anthropology, starting with introductions to archaeology, cultural anthropology and biological anthropology. After that, the major leaves room to steer. Six hours must come from 4000-level courses, and you choose one writing-intensive course, such as bioarchaeology or ethnography. One course must be experiential, and the list includes a 6-hour archaeological field school, forensic skeletal analysis, early technologies and anthropology in the community. Advisors push majors to sample all four subdisciplines, linguistic anthropology included.

Anthropology Major
Four tracks sit inside one anthropology major at Northern Michigan: archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, forensic anthropology and general anthropology. The archaeology field school runs four weeks on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan for 6 credits, with daily excavation and evening lab work in survey, mapping, shovel testing and artifact analysis. Forensic coursework can include visits to NMU’s FROST outdoor facility, where students study how weather and snow change decomposition. Courses range from ethnographic field methods and museum studies to human osteology and an internship.

Anthropology [BA]
Eastern Michigan’s 33-hour anthropology BA keeps cultural anthropology at the center while letting you lean toward biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology or archaeology. You take five required courses, one in each subfield plus a history of theory, then pick culture-area courses such as Peoples and Cultures of Africa or Native North American Cultures. A methodology choice includes ethnographic methods, 5-credit archaeological fieldwork, artifact analysis or human osteology. The last six hours are two 400-level courses, one in cultural anthropology and one writing intensive. Research abroad, conference presentations and internships are all listed as guided options.

2 schools in Michigan awarded research doctorates in anthropology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 2 of 2 eligible programs at this level.
Michigan's Anthropology PhD admits students with either a bachelor's or master's degree, but does not offer a separate terminal MA. Its four subfields provide different methods and research communities; the sociocultural group, for example, connects with the university's joint Anthropology and History and Anthropology and Social Work doctorates. The department's graduate handbook requires proficiency in a language with substantial scholarly literature before advancement to doctoral candidacy, which may differ from the language needed in the field. That distinction can shape a student's preparation for a specific research site.

PhD in Anthropology
Michigan State's Anthropology doctorate includes archaeology, medical anthropology, and a Culture, Resources, and Power area connecting sociocultural and linguistic research. Archaeology students can build projects around fieldwork, collections, or heritage management; medical anthropology examines biomedicine, ethnomedical systems, and health disparities. Applicants without a master's degree may still enter, with an MA earned along the doctoral route through a thesis or non-thesis plan. That combination of research areas and entry paths is useful for students comparing health-focused ethnography with material-culture or heritage work.
