What the In-State and Out-of-State Gap Means for You
Every school on this list is public, so where you live sets most of your price. The out-of-state premium runs from $4,000 at Western Carolina to $22,278 at Florida, where the published out-of-state figure is $28,659. If you’d pay out-of-state rates, read that column first, because the order changes.
For a nonresident, the lowest published figures here are Western Carolina at $8,630, then Florida Atlantic and South Florida at $17,324 each. Western Carolina’s number needs an update, though. North Carolina raised NC Promise tuition for out-of-state students from $2,500 to $3,500 a semester, and out-of-state students who first enroll in Summer 2026 or later pay the higher rate.
Some schools narrow the gap for neighbors. Georgia Southern has a Border State Waiver that gives eligible undergraduates living in Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina or Tennessee in-state tuition rates. West Florida lists a 2026–27 online rate of $325.23 a credit hour for Alabama residents, against $714.03 for full out-of-state students.
How Much In-State Tuition Varies Across These Programs
In-state, the whole list sits within $1,780. Western Carolina’s $4,630 is the low end and South Florida’s $6,410 is the high end. Leave Western Carolina out and the other nine fall between $4,879 and $6,410, and the last eight sit within $634 of each other. At that range, a few hundred dollars of tuition shouldn’t decide your school.
Western Carolina stands apart because of NC Promise. In-state undergraduates pay $500 in tuition per fall and spring semester, and there are no eligibility requirements. Fees didn’t drop with tuition, though. The university’s 2026–27 sample budget shows $1,878 in fees per semester, nearly four times the tuition line.

What the Published Price Includes and Leaves Out
The figures in this guide are the 2024–25 annual tuition and required fees each school reported for full-time undergraduates. They’re schoolwide figures before any grant or scholarship, so they aren’t your bill. Housing, food, books and travel sit outside them. At Western Carolina, a sample in-state residential semester for 2026–27 totals $8,226.10 to $8,748.10 once housing and a meal plan are added.
Field school is the cost anthropology students forget. West Florida requires one field methods course worth 3 to 9 credits. Its field school page says tuition follows regular UWF rates and living arrangements are your responsibility, and the forensic field school asks you to buy a dig kit estimated at $50. Ask where and when each field course runs, since a summer away from home adds rent and travel.
Elsewhere, fieldwork is a choice you can price. Georgia Southern counts up to 9 hours of archaeology field session or internship toward anthropology electives. Kennesaw State requires a practicum or an internship, and its practicum can be field-based or on-campus research. North Florida lets you take archaeological field methods as one of two high-impact courses, alongside options such as ethnographic methods and lab methods.
Ways to Cut the Cost of an Anthropology Bachelor’s
Seven of the ten programs are at Florida public universities, and Florida rewards a state college start. The State University System describes an established 2+2 process that moves Associate in Arts graduates into upper-division programs at state universities. West Florida also points transfer students to the state’s Common Prerequisites Manual, so you can take the right introductory anthropology courses before you move.
If you qualify for Bright Futures, Florida covers 100% of tuition and applicable fees for Florida Academic Scholars and 75% for Florida Medallion Scholars at public institutions. Medallion Scholars in an associate degree program at a Florida College System institution get 100%, which lowers the cost of starting at a state college even further.
In Georgia, the HOPE Scholarship pays a portion of tuition for residents who meet its academic requirements. The University System of Georgia also makes its 42-hour Core IMPACTS courses transferable among its institutions, so general education you finish at another system school carries over to Kennesaw State or Georgia Southern.
Check the residency rule before you plan a cheap start somewhere else. Florida Gulf Coast requires 30 of your last 60 credits to be completed at FGCU. A rule like that decides how much of the degree you can move to a lower-priced school, so find the equivalent rule in any catalog you’re considering.
What You Keep and What You Give Up at a Lower Price
On this list, the three highest graduation rates come with the three highest in-state prices. Florida reports 91%, Central Florida 78% and South Florida 77%, at in-state prices of $6,368 to $6,410. Western Carolina reports 60% at $4,630. That extra cost is less than $1,800 a year.
Those graduation rates are schoolwide six-year rates for first-time, full-time students, not rates for anthropology majors. They still tell you how often a school’s students finish, and finishing on time is the cheapest way through any degree. One extra year of tuition and living costs would wipe out the in-state price difference between any two schools on this list.
College Scorecard median earnings for anthropology graduates on this list run from $33,389 at Florida Atlantic to $55,879 at Georgia Southern, and they don’t follow price. Program size varies too. Central Florida awarded 103 anthropology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24 and Georgia Southern awarded 8. Ask any program you’re weighing how often its upper-level anthropology courses run.
Questions About Paying for a Anthropology Degree
Which Anthropology Program on This List Costs the Least In-State?
Western Carolina reported $4,630 in 2024–25 tuition and fees, the lowest on this list. Required fees, housing and meals come on top, so build your budget from the full cost of attendance.

Can Out-of-State Students Pay In-State Tuition at These Schools?
Sometimes. Georgia Southern’s Border State Waiver gives eligible undergraduates from Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee in-state tuition rates. West Florida charges Alabama residents a lower Alabama rate for online courses. Otherwise, plan around the out-of-state figure in the table and ask each school about waivers before you apply.
Does the Published Tuition Include Anthropology Field School?
No. The published figure is a schoolwide annual amount and doesn’t price a specific course or summer session. At West Florida, field school tuition follows regular UWF rates, living arrangements are your responsibility, and the forensic field school asks you to buy a dig kit estimated at $50. Add travel and housing for any field course away from home.

Is Starting at a Community College a Good Way to Save on an Anthropology Degree?
It can be, if your credits transfer cleanly. Florida’s 2+2 process moves Associate in Arts graduates into upper-division programs at state universities, and Bright Futures covers 100% of tuition and applicable fees for Medallion Scholars in Florida College System associate programs. In Georgia, Core IMPACTS courses transfer among University System of Georgia schools. Take the introductory anthropology courses your target school expects.
Do Lower-Priced Anthropology Programs Have Lower Graduation Rates?
On this list, the three highest schoolwide graduation rates belong to Florida at 91%, Central Florida at 78% and South Florida at 77%, which also have the three highest in-state prices. The price difference is less than $1,800 a year. Every school here reports a schoolwide graduation rate of at least 50%, because that’s a requirement for the list.
How Much Do Anthropology Graduates From These Schools Earn?
College Scorecard median earnings for anthropology bachelor’s graduates from these schools run from $33,389 at Florida Atlantic to $55,879 at Georgia Southern. A median is the midpoint for that school’s graduates, not a job offer, and it doesn’t follow price on this list. If your career plan needs a master’s, budget for that too.
