Anthropology programs in Florida differ in how they turn classroom study into research. UCF separates its general BA from a methods-and-practice route, UF builds an approved anthropology experience into its BA, and USF asks doctoral students to undertake sustained field research. Among the ten featured degrees, the master's choices also differ: UCF offers a non-thesis option, while Florida Atlantic and Florida State center their programs on a thesis. Start with the kind of project you want to complete, then compare the course plan that supports it.

5 schools in Florida awarded anthropology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 405 bachelor’s programs nationwide. This section shows the top 5 of 12 eligible programs at this level.
Florida’s Anthropology BA joins cultural, biological, archaeological, and linguistic work in a course plan that ends with a capstone. The major includes statistics and an experiential learning requirement, so students should plan for both analytical coursework and a field, research, or other approved experience. The catalog allows an anthropology field school or study abroad to meet the experience requirement when approved. That flexibility matters if a student wants to test a research interest outside the classroom while still completing the BA’s broad subfield foundation.

USF separates its applied Anthropology BA from a distinct BS in Biomedical Anthropology. The BA introduces the major subfields and emphasizes using anthropology on current social problems; the biomedical degree concentrates more directly on health, illness, and human biology. BA students can seek faculty collaboration, field schools, and applied research through the department, though those opportunities should be planned with an adviser rather than assumed to be part of every student’s schedule. The distinction is useful for applicants deciding whether broad applied anthropology or a health-centered science plan fits their interests.

Anthropology BA or BS
Florida State offers both BA and BS routes in anthropology. Each requires 30 anthropology credits, including introductory archaeology, cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, and a history-of-anthropology course. Half of those anthropology credits must be at the 3000 or 4000 level, so the degree leaves real room for advanced topical work after the common foundation. A student comparing the two credentials should look at the university-wide BA and BS requirements alongside the shared major: the department’s anthropology core itself is the same stated 30-credit structure.

Anthropology BA
UCF’s Anthropology BA offers a General Track and an Anthropological Methods and Practice Track. The practice route asks students to take methods plus field or lab work and a high-impact experience such as an internship, field school, or directed research. The department states that online students follow the General Track, which is an important difference for applicants comparing delivery formats. Both routes share an upper-division anthropology base and an exit examination; the decision is how much structured hands-on work a student wants built into the degree plan.

Anthropology, B.A.
West Florida’s Anthropology BA opens with a common core of anthropology as a profession, principles of archaeology, and peoples and cultures of the world. You then choose a theory course and an analysis course, with options such as GIS in anthropology, human osteology, anthropological data analysis and archaeological lab methods. Every major takes one field methods course, picked from maritime, terrestrial or combined archaeological field methods, archaeological survey, ethnographic research methods or forensic field methods. Distribution electives cover archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology, and the major ends with an anthropology capstone. The maritime field school includes excavation at the Rosario shipwreck, a Spanish vessel that sank in 1705.

3 schools in Florida have a separately admitting master’s route confirmed on an official school page and reported anthropology master’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 144 master’s programs nationwide. You can apply to these master’s programs without entering a Ph.D. program. This section shows the top 3 of 3 eligible programs at this level.
Florida State’s anthropology master’s paths begin with three core seminars in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and biological anthropology. The department’s graduate bulletin then requires a comprehensive examination, thesis prospectus, and defended thesis for its MA or MS. FSU has distinctive research access through the Southeast Archeological Center and offers terrestrial and underwater archaeology methods; the bulletin cautions that underwater preparation can add time and field or diving coursework beyond the usual plan. Applicants drawn to that specialty should account for its technical prerequisites rather than assume it fits inside the standard minimum degree hours.

Florida Atlantic’s Anthropology MA is a 30-credit thesis program. Students study theory and seminars across biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and archaeology, add advanced work in a chosen subfield, and take quantitative reasoning before developing original research with faculty supervision. The department’s graduate page also describes a separate Master of Arts in Teaching, with pedagogy and a teaching internship; that credential should not be mistaken for the research MA. Applicants can use the department’s research areas, including ethnography, prehistoric archaeology, and primate ecology, to identify plausible thesis supervision.

UCF’s Anthropology MA uses an adviser-led model and a shared nine-credit core in archaeological theory, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology. Students then choose a thesis or non-thesis plan within a minimum 30-credit degree. The non-thesis plan adds electives and a comprehensive exam; the thesis plan requires an original defended project. UCF describes archaeology, forensic anthropology, paleoethnobotany, bioarchaeology, isotope and zooarchaeology, and geospatial labs as possible research settings. Prospective students should connect a faculty adviser and available facility to a concrete project rather than assume every lab is open for every topic.

2 schools in Florida awarded research doctorates in anthropology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 2 of 2 eligible programs at this level.
The University of Florida's Anthropology PhD lets a student choose a specialized track in one field, a multifield track combining two anthropology fields, or an interdisciplinary track with another discipline. On the interdisciplinary route, doctoral students take substantial outside coursework and include an outside faculty member on the supervisory committee. Archaeology students can also draw on field schools, artifact-analysis laboratories, GIS work, and museum collections described by the department. The track choice affects the research committee and course plan, so it is more than a label attached to the dissertation.

Applied Anthropology PhD
USF's Applied Anthropology PhD requires a master's degree in anthropology or a related field and builds its research plan around archaeology, biological, cultural, or medical anthropology. You'll take a doctoral proseminar and advanced quantitative methods, then add coursework outside anthropology. The program includes two consecutive semesters of doctoral field research and a qualifying examination covering your applied and external specializations. Optional specializations include cultural resource management, environmental anthropology, and heritage studies. Your dissertation can develop from research or an internship.

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national anthropology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Florida’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. This page features up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Master’s lists weigh graduate tuition (25%), research activity (25%), program reputation (30%), and master’s degrees awarded (20%). Doctoral lists weigh research activity (35%), program reputation (35%), and doctoral degrees awarded (30%). Master’s lists require an official school source confirming a separately admitting master’s route. How these scores work.

An experience requirement can mean different things at different schools. UF's BA includes an approved anthropology experience alongside statistics and a capstone. Florida Atlantic, featured here for its master’s, also requires research-methods credits in its undergraduate major, with choices in bioarchaeology, cultural research, independent research, and internships. UCF's campus Methods and Practice track adds a methods course, applied field or laboratory work, and a high-impact experience. UCF also offers a General track, so compare the course structure of both tracks before you choose.
At the master's level, compare the final project before comparing electives. Florida Atlantic's MA leads to original thesis research and includes quantitative reasoning. UCF uses an apprenticeship model with a faculty adviser, then offers either a defended thesis or additional coursework and a comprehensive exam. Florida State offers thesis-based MA and MS routes. Its bulletin describes underwater archaeology preparation that can require extra field and diving coursework, a practical consideration if that specialty is your goal.
Doctoral study calls for a more specific research match. UF describes archaeological field schools, artifact-analysis labs, GIS work, and museum collections among its research resources. USF's Applied Anthropology PhD requires a doctoral proseminar, quantitative methods, study outside anthropology, and two consecutive semesters of field research. Its concentrations and optional specializations let you distinguish the main anthropological field from a focus such as heritage studies or environmental anthropology.
