Anthropology programs in North Carolina let you compare research settings as well as degree levels. Western Carolina describes study at its human-decomposition research station, UNC Charlotte offers local archaeology and nonprofit internships, and UNC Wilmington lists field schools and osteology laboratories. Those opportunities sit alongside broad undergraduate majors, applied master's routes, and the two featured doctorates. Duke's listed program is Evolutionary Anthropology, while UNC Chapel Hill trains doctoral researchers across archaeology, biological, medical, and sociocultural anthropology. Match the methods and setting to the questions you want to investigate.

6 schools in North Carolina awarded anthropology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 405 bachelor’s programs nationwide. This section shows the top 6 of 14 eligible programs at this level.
Anthropology BA
UNC Chapel Hill's Anthropology BA requires a theoretical-perspectives course and a capstone seminar. You can choose theory focused on archaeology, society and culture, or biological anthropology, with the department directing majors to complete that requirement in the junior year. Field-oriented work is encouraged through internships, research, or field schools, but only six hours of that coursework can count toward the major. An optional honors route adds a senior project and thesis sequence under faculty supervision, so plan research credit alongside the regular major requirements.

Anthropology BA: General Anthropology Concentration
NC State’s General Anthropology BA uses a planned sequence rather than an open collection of electives. Students cover biological and cultural anthropology, choose archaeology or linguistic anthropology, and then select theory, methods, and ethnography coursework. The methods choice can involve archaeological methods, cultural methods, or an approved advanced forensic option. World-language study remains part of the BA plan. Someone interested in a particular subfield should review the methods and ethnography lists together: those choices are where this general concentration becomes a more focused course of study.

Anthropology BA
Appalachian State distinguishes its humanities-based Anthropology BA from a science-oriented BS. The BA emphasizes anthropological content, theory, methods, and social and cultural practices across regions. Students drawn toward archaeology or biological anthropology can examine the BS, while the department’s separate multidisciplinary BS lets students construct a 30-credit adviser-approved course contract. For BA applicants, that degree structure makes the choice more than a label: it helps clarify whether the planned work should center cultural interpretation or the department’s science-based pathways.

Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology
Duke’s cultural anthropology major is ten courses, and three of them are fixed: an introduction, Theoretical Foundations in the spring and Fieldwork Methods in the fall. None of those three can be replaced with study abroad or transfer credit. The other seven run at the 100 level or above, with at least one at the 300 level or higher, and up to three courses from study abroad or transfer can count. At least five of your ten must be taught by instructors whose primary appointment is in the department. The department urges majors to finish the introduction and either theory or methods before a study-away semester. Duke awarded 12 degrees in 2023–24.

Anthropology BA or BS
Western Carolina offers anthropology concentrations in archaeological practice, archaeological studies, cultural anthropology, and forensic anthropology. You'll study across sociocultural and linguistic anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology, then use electives or a concentration to develop a focus. The program describes access to its Forensic Osteology Research Station for studying human decomposition. An optional Engaged Learning Experience can involve travel, an internship, or independent study. Compare the BA and BS requirements alongside your concentration, because the program offers several ways to organize that research interest.

Anthropology BA
UNC Charlotte's Anthropology BA offers general and applied anthropology routes, with the applied concentration connecting students to internships in local organizations. The department's experiential course menu includes a summer archaeology field project at a local site, field primatology, a teaching internship, and an internship outside the university. In that external internship, you can gain research or work experience with a nonprofit agency or organization, including museums and social-service settings. These course choices make the setting of your work part of the degree decision.

East Carolina’s Anthropology MA works from an applied department with strengths in coastal environmental anthropology, medical anthropology, forensic work, and bioarchaeology. Its curriculum combines multiple subfields, methods, and research design, then offers several endings: a thesis, professional internship, non-thesis plan, or teacher-training requirements. The department describes assistantships for many, but not all, MA students, so funding belongs in an individual offer rather than an assumed benefit. Applicants should compare the final-project route with the faculty research they want to join, especially where field or community work is central.

UNC Charlotte’s Anthropology MA makes its culminating project track specific. General Anthropology students write a research thesis, while Applied or Medical Anthropology students complete an agency or organization practicum and a research-based report. All routes share history of anthropology, subfield work, and a methods course; the applied tracks add a seminar and practicum sequence. Charlotte also describes a separate MA/MPH dual degree for medical anthropology. Applicants should distinguish that joint credential from the ordinary MA, then look for a plausible practicum partner or thesis adviser before choosing a concentration.

2 schools in North Carolina awarded research doctorates in anthropology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 2 of 2 eligible programs at this level.
Anthropology PhD
UNC Chapel Hill pairs doctoral research with a professional-development portfolio built throughout the program. You'll take an integrated core proseminar followed by a specialized subfield proseminar, and first-year students attend The Practice of Anthropology seminar. A substantial independent research or writing project comes next under faculty review. Before the written and oral doctoral exams, you assemble a dissertation committee and address the language skills your fieldwork needs. Archaeology and biological-anthropology projects may combine fieldwork with existing collections and data, while sociocultural research centers extended field study.

Evolutionary Anthropology PhD
Duke's Evolutionary Anthropology PhD requires breadth beyond your dissertation specialty. You'll take a graduate tutorial and courses drawn from areas such as evolutionary theory, cognition and ecology, paleontology, genetics, or research design and statistics. A required minor field adds another area of expertise, represented on your dissertation committee and assessed in the preliminary exam. Writing experiences begin in the early years, and the program requires annual research presentations and teaching experience. These milestones connect scientific training with practice explaining and defending your research.
