Emory's Anthropology Major (BA) leans toward sociocultural anthropology across twelve courses. You take Concepts and Methods in Cultural Anthropology plus one more introductory course, then a foundational course and a world-area course. Four courses form a concentration you choose when you declare: Global Development, Health, and Sustainability; Power, Identity, and Social Justice; Mind, Body, and Health; Meaning, Media, and Performance; or one you design with a faculty advisor. As a senior you take the fall capstone seminar Why Anthropology Matters, unless you finish the honors program and substitute your thesis credits.

Anthropology AB
Georgia’s Anthropology AB requires an introductory anthropology course before major work, then at least one course each in biological, cultural, and archaeological anthropology. Students can keep that broad approach or build a pathway around one subfield. The department also offers an AB/MA Double Dawgs route focused on ecological and environmental anthropology, which is separate from the standard AB. Its research and field-school pages list ethnographic methods, archaeological field methods, museum internship, and faculty-mentored research as possible experiential courses, giving students several distinct ways to test an interest.

Anthropology, B.S.
Kennesaw State’s Anthropology BS is a face-to-face program on the Kennesaw campus. After introductory anthropology and biological anthropology, you take anthropological theory, principles of archaeology and cultural anthropology. The applied part is required: you complete an anthropology practicum or an internship, plus research methods in anthropology. The practicum can be field-based or on-campus research in a supervised setting. Your 18 credits of major electives must include at least one course each in cultural anthropology, biological anthropology and archaeology, with choices such as forensic anthropology field techniques, a lab in archaeology and a Greek osteology field school. Faculty also offer fieldwork opportunities in Belize, Greece, India and West Africa.

Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology
Georgia State’s Anthropology BA is built on all four subfields: biological, archaeological, social/cultural and linguistic, with qualitative and quantitative research methods in the mix. Every major takes a capstone course aimed at life after graduation, from careers to graduate school. Upper-division electives range across topics such as migrants and refugees, urban processes, food and diet, language and health, and global health discourse. You can write an Honors thesis from supervised, original research, or complete an internship with an organization in Atlanta, in another state or abroad. Georgia State awarded 30 of these degrees in 2023–24, a big cohort by the standards of its state page.

Anthropology, B.A.
Georgia Southern’s Anthropology BA trains you across the four fields, cultural, linguistic and biological anthropology and archaeology, with special emphasis on cultural anthropology and archaeology. The major requires Frameworks for Anthropology, either archaeological methods and theory or cultural research methods, and a capstone seminar. You add 21 hours of upper-level anthropology electives and a 15-hour minor. Up to 9 hours of archaeology field session or anthropology internship count toward those electives. The department’s archaeology is focused on the American Southeast, and students gain curation and conservation experience as volunteers and paid employees in its archaeology labs and the R M Bogan Archaeological Repository.

Bachelor of Science with a Major in Anthropology
Everyone in West Georgia’s Anthropology BS takes History of Anthropological Thought, then finishes in an Anthropology Capstone where you apply what you’ve learned to current human challenges. In between, you pick one methods course, such as Ethnographic Field Methods, Archaeological Field Research or Field Methods in Cultural Resource Management, plus one course each in archaeology, linguistics, physical anthropology and cultural anthropology. The linguistics choices are Language and Culture or Narrative and Storytelling in Ethnography. An internship with a public or private agency can count toward your electives.

BA in Anthropology
Augusta’s Anthropology BA covers three subfields: cultural anthropology, biological anthropology and archaeology. Course topics include violence and warfare, forensic anthropology, historical archaeology and medical anthropology. Two labs give you hands-on time. In the Biological Anthropology Lab you see how the human experience affects the skeleton, and the Archaeology Lab offers volunteer and independent research options. Outside class, you can join the Anthropology Student Union or the Museum Club, take a study abroad trip, or work with faculty through the Center for Social Science Research. The 4 degrees awarded in 2023–24 make it one of the smaller programs on its state page.

Georgia State’s Anthropology MA gives students a consequential choice between a thesis based on primary research and a capstone designed around applied work. Its graduate handbook situates the program in metropolitan Atlanta and describes training in anthropological theory and methods across social, cultural, political-economic, and biological questions. Museum anthropology, ethnography, and cultural resource management appear as separate certificate or concentration possibilities, each with its own rules. A prospective student should choose the intended culminating work and discuss a relevant adviser before treating all these offerings as a single automatic pathway.

Anthropology PhD
Emory’s Anthropology PhD spans archaeology, biological anthropology and socio-cultural anthropology, with two foundations courses that engage critically across all three. After that you take anthropology electives and set a methodology requirement with your advisor, which might mean language training, statistics or laboratory techniques. You complete three assistantships before candidacy and co-teach or teach a class solo before you defend. Dissertation proposals get early attention: you start building the framework in the second year and present it to the department in spring of the third year before heading to the field or lab. Biological anthropology students also join a one-credit research seminar each semester of their first three years.

Ph.D. in Anthropology
Ecology and environment tie cultural anthropologists, archaeologists and biological anthropologists together in UGA’s PhD program. It is cohort-based and designed to be finished in five years, and you don’t need a master’s degree to apply. An anthropology and integrative conservation PhD sits alongside it as a second route. Students draw on UGA-wide resources including the Center for Integrative Conservation Research, the Laboratory of Archaeology, the Georgia Museum of Natural History and the Center for Applied Isotope Studies. Mentoring compacts and Individual Development Plans are part of the experience from the start. Only 1 degree was awarded in 2023–24.

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national anthropology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Georgia’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. This page features up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Master’s lists weigh graduate tuition (25%), research activity (25%), program reputation (30%), and master’s degrees awarded (20%). Doctoral lists weigh research activity (35%), program reputation (35%), and doctoral degrees awarded (30%). Master’s lists require an official school source confirming a separately admitting master’s route. Methodology and data sources.
