Anthropology BA: Cultural Emphasis
BYU’s cultural-emphasis Anthropology BA builds toward original ethnographic work. After theory and topical courses, students take Ethnographic Research Design, complete a field project through a faculty-recognized field school, and write a senior thesis. The catalog says a local field option needs faculty approval in exceptional circumstances, a practical constraint for anyone planning to stay near campus. An archaeology emphasis has a different field-school and lab sequence, so applicants should choose the emphasis before assuming that the cultural track’s research sequence covers their intended kind of fieldwork.

Anthropology BS/BA
Utah’s anthropology major begins with a 13-credit foundation: Culture and the Human Experience, Human Origins, Evolution and Diversity, Prehistoric Archaeology, Evolution of Human Nature, and a short course called Anthropology as a Major and Career. After that come two 2000-level core courses, four 3000-level courses and nine credits of integrative and advanced work, at least three at the 5000 level. Internships and learning abroad can count there when approved. The major totals at least 40 anthropology credits plus 12 in allied fields such as biology, geography or sociology, and an emphasis is available if you want a specific subdiscipline. Forty-nine degrees were awarded in 2023–24, second on the Utah page.

Anthropology - BA, BS
Utah State puts everyone through four core courses, then lets you stay general or choose one of four tracks: Cultural/Applied, Biological, Archaeology/Cultural Resource Management, or Environmental Change, Community Engagement, and Wellness. Students are encouraged, not required, to pick a track, and the tracks run 27 to 30 credits, with a capstone in the biological track. The program totals 40 to 43 credits, and the BA adds foreign language proficiency to the BS. USU describes labs and real-world fieldwork as part of the degree and offers a museum studies certificate that is popular with anthropology majors. Thirty-six students graduated in 2023–24, third on the Utah page.

Anthropology, B.A.
Utah Valley asks every anthropology BA student for the same 24-credit discipline core: Social Cultural Anthropology, World Prehistory or Biological Anthropology, Introduction to Anthropological Analysis, Language and Culture, Applied Anthropology, Ethnographic Methods, History of Anthropological Thought, and Contemporary Theory and Debates. Eighteen credits of upper-division anthropology electives follow. The BA adds a 12-credit language requirement to the 120-credit degree. Graduation also calls for two Writing Enriched courses and one Global/Intercultural course. Seventeen students earned the degree in 2023–24, and UVU is fourth on the Utah page.

Anthropology (BA/BS)
Southern Utah’s 36-credit anthropology curriculum pairs 18 credits of core with 18 credits of upper-division electives. The core covers Cultural Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, Introduction to Archaeology, Medical Anthropology, Anthropological Theory and Methods, and a Senior Capstone. Up to six credits of Archaeology Field Methods, which introduces survey and excavation techniques, can count as electives. The department takes an annual field trip to the San Diego area with the Biology department, and you choose a BA with a language requirement or a BS with a math or science requirement. You need a 2.5 GPA in your anthropology courses to graduate in the major. Eleven degrees were awarded in 2023–24, fifth on the Utah page.

Anthropology (BS)
Weber State’s anthropology BS has a 15-credit core of Introduction to Anthropology, Anthropological Theory, Anthropological Research Methods, a Senior Capstone Seminar and Social Statistics, then a choice of two tracks: General Anthropology at 24 credits, or Archaeology, which needs at least 42 anthropology credits overall. Electives include Archaeological Field Techniques for 3 to 6 credits, Archaeological Laboratory Techniques, Human Osteology and Introduction to Forensic Anthropology. A minor is required, and you need a C or better in every course counted toward the major. Eleven students graduated in 2023–24, sixth on the Utah page.

Anthropology MS in Archaeology and Cultural Resource Management
Utah State’s degree is an Anthropology MS focused specifically on archaeology and cultural resource management, not a general anthropology MA. Its core joins archaeological theory, quantitative methods, and CRM policy, with electives in areas such as zooarchaeology and geospatial analysis. The catalog requires an approved archaeological field school or equivalent experience before matriculation; those field-school credits do not count toward the graduate degree. Students then complete either a defended thesis or approved paper or project route, making prior field experience and professional archaeological practice central to the program.

Anthropology Doctoral Program
Utah’s anthropology doctorate asks you to take ANTH 6611, Preparation of Grant Proposals, and to arrive with basic proficiency in statistics. The rest of your coursework is set by a five-member supervisory committee, which also writes and grades your qualifying exam. The exam has two parts, a written breadth piece and a dissertation research proposal, followed by an oral meeting with the committee ten days after you submit. The department recommends sitting for it by the end of year three, and all requirements must be finished within six years of acceptance. With 2 doctorates awarded in 2023–24, expect a small cohort and close work with your chair.

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national anthropology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Utah’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. This page features up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Master’s lists weigh graduate tuition (25%), research activity (25%), program reputation (30%), and master’s degrees awarded (20%). Doctoral lists weigh research activity (35%), program reputation (35%), and doctoral degrees awarded (30%). Master’s lists require an official school source confirming a separately admitting master’s route. Methodology and data sources.
