B.A. in Anthropology
Vermont lets you take the anthropology major as a general degree or tailor it with a concentration in archaeology and heritage management or in the anthropology of global health. The department says double majors work especially well, because the subfields border so many humanities, social science and natural science disciplines. Learning outcomes ask you to tell the four subfields apart (cultural, linguistic, biological and archaeological), weigh ethical dilemmas in research, and develop your own research questions and methods. With 34 degrees awarded in 2023–24, it is one of the larger anthropology options on the Vermont page.

Anthropology Major
Middlebury’s anthropology major is ten courses: two introductions, two 200-level courses, History of Anthropological Thought, one research methods course, a 400-level seminar and three electives. At least eight must be fall or spring courses taught at Middlebury, so winter term and transfer credit only stretch so far. You can add a one-semester senior project of roughly 25 to 40 pages or a two-semester project of 60 to 100 pages, which ends with an oral defense. Earn an A- on the project and an A- average in the major, and you graduate with departmental honors.

Anthropology
Bennington doesn’t hand you a fixed anthropology checklist. You work with faculty to design the content, structure and sequence of your own study, called your Plan, and anthropology is an area you can build into it. Coursework introduces basic anthropological skills and tools, which you practice in research on campus or during the annual off-campus Field Work Term. Students whose plans include anthropology are encouraged to do advanced work, and theses sharpen data collection, critical thinking and communication. Recent thesis topics range from China’s one-child policy to community arts in Philadelphia to spoken language and group identity in a Lebanese village.

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national anthropology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Vermont’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. This page features up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Read how state lists are built.

These are BLS median annual wages for Vermont and the United States from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. A median is the midpoint among workers in the occupation, from new hires to senior staff, so it is not a starting salary for a new graduate. The 10th–90th percentile range shows what the middle 80% of workers earn in the state.
