Wisconsin–Madison’s anthropology major requires biological anthropology, cultural theory and ethnography, an undergraduate seminar, and two of three archaeology courses. That distribution makes archaeology a substantial part of the common course plan even for students drawn to contemporary cultural study. The department requires at least 30 anthropology credits and permits a supervised thesis to replace four required credits for qualifying upper-level students. Language is not a major requirement, but the department advises students considering graduate research on a particular region to plan relevant language and field training with an adviser.

Beloit’s anthropology major is 10.5 units. You start with three foundational introductions (100, 110 and 120), finished by the end of sophomore year, then take Anthropology 201 and three more courses from the essentials category. The major ends with Anthropology 380, a half-unit Senior Capstone. One essentials course can be replaced by an intermediate non-English language course, such as Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian or Spanish. The department strongly recommends fieldwork courses, overseas experience and foreign language, and an honors thesis if you are heading to graduate school in anthropology.

Anthropology Major
Wisconsin Lutheran’s anthropology major draws on biology, including vertebrate zoology, botany, anatomy and physiology, immunology and pathophysiology, and splits into three research tracks. Archaeology covers excavation, artifact labeling and analysis, and transit survey and cartography. Biological anthropology builds skills in forensic reconstruction, developmental biology and analytic chemistry. Cultural anthropology adds a range of social and cultural traditions and languages. Past student work includes mock archaeological sites, flintknapping, soil phosphorus levels and prehistoric crania from the Milwaukee Public Museum, and majors have interned in Milwaukee museums.

Wisconsin–Milwaukee awards an Anthropology MS, with a thesis and oral defense required of every master’s student. The department combines archaeological, biological, and sociocultural work and offers a separate Museum Studies certificate in cooperation with the Milwaukee Public Museum; the certificate needs its own application. Department guidance says required graduate courses are offered at night for students who work full-time, though electives may be scheduled in the day. That scheduling detail and the thesis requirement are worth weighing alongside the museum partnership when building a feasible plan.

Anthropology, PhD
Madison builds each anthropology PhD individually with faculty guidance inside a specialization: archaeology, social and cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, or an intersectional track for combined interests such as paleoanthropology, ethnoarchaeology or biocultural anthropology. Admission assumes undergraduate training equal to the Madison major and master’s-level competence in a special field. A minor program is expected, so an archaeologist might add geology or surveying, and a biological anthropologist comparative anatomy and genetics. The program admits for fall only, with a December 1 deadline and three recommendation letters, and the department normally runs an archaeological field school every second summer.

Anthropology, PhD
The anthropology doctorate at UWM requires at least 54 graduate credits beyond the bachelor’s, 27 of them in residence. The core is Survey of Physical Anthropology, Perspectives on Prehistory and Survey of Cultural Anthropology, plus a methods course (options include GIS, zooarchaeology, ethnography techniques or an archaeological field school) and an advanced seminar. You show proficiency in a foreign language or another scholarly skill, pass an oral preliminary exam on two to four topics within five years of enrolling, defend a dissertation proposal, then defend the dissertation. The department also partners with the Milwaukee Public Museum on a museum studies certificate.

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national anthropology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Wisconsin’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. This page features up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Master’s lists weigh graduate tuition (25%), research activity (25%), program reputation (30%), and master’s degrees awarded (20%). Doctoral lists weigh research activity (35%), program reputation (35%), and doctoral degrees awarded (30%). Master’s lists require an official school source confirming a separately admitting master’s route. How these scores work.
