Every program on this list expects serious mathematics before the first day. Wisconsin (94.8) requires a three-course calculus sequence, linear algebra and mathematical statistics and calls those a bare minimum, and Minnesota (94.3) asks for multivariate calculus and linear algebra. Build the math first. Then compare funding, fields and how many years you can expect to spend before the dissertation.
What Happens in the First Year of an Economics PhD?
The first year follows the same outline almost everywhere: theory, quantitative methods and a test. Columbia assigns two-semester sequences in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, a fall mathematical methods course, and a spring course called Perspectives that examines mainstream approaches to economic theory and teaches the design of empirical research. Chicago builds year one around core subjects and tests them in a three-part Core Examination in the following summer, with a dedicated Core Mentor and Core Clinics to help students prepare. Berkeley fits econometric methods, the methods of economic history and microeconomic and macroeconomic theory into the first two semesters.
After the core you choose fields. Columbia asks for two fields of concentration in the second year and starts students presenting their own research in a colloquium. Berkeley has students prepare for examination in two fields, write a dissertation prospectus and take an oral examination before advancing to candidacy, a stage it says typically takes two to three years.
| Program | Year One | After the Core |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago | Core subjects, then a three-part Core Examination in the summer | Second-year fields, a third-year Required Research Seminar and an advisory committee by the end of year three |
| Columbia | Micro, macro and econometrics sequences, mathematical methods and Perspectives | Two fields, a colloquium, a third-year paper and a dissertation proposal defended by the end of year four |
| Berkeley | Econometrics, economic history methods and micro and macro theory | Two fields, a prospectus and an oral examination before candidacy |
How Much Math Do Economics PhD Programs Expect?
The admissions pages are direct about it. Take them at their word. Wisconsin says entering students are required to have taken a three-course sequence in calculus, a course in linear algebra and a course in mathematical statistics, and that these prerequisites are a bare minimum. It also says applicants do not need an economics bachelor’s degree and that its students hold degrees in economics, mathematics, statistics and other fields. Minnesota asks for coursework in multivariate calculus and linear algebra, and recommends analysis, differential equations, optimization, topology, probability or measure theory.
Minnesota adds that it receives far more applications from students who meet its standards than it can admit. That makes a real analysis or probability course a stronger addition to an application than another economics elective. Undergraduates can plan that sequence using the economics bachelor’s programs, where Florida, for example, lists real analysis and probability among its recommendations for graduate-school applicants.
Is an Economics PhD Funded?
Funding is where the programs differ most. Read it closely. Chicago says all students are fully funded for the duration of its six-year program, and the Division of the Social Sciences describes that support as a full-tuition scholarship, a health insurance premium for the student, the Graduate Student Services Fee and a living stipend. Wisconsin says funding is awarded to applicants on a competitive basis, so an offer of admission and an offer of support are separate questions there.
Teaching is part of many packages. Stanford requires one quarter of teaching experience. Ask each department how many years of support are guaranteed, whether they depend on teaching or research assignments, and what happens after the fifth year, since those answers change the real cost more than the tuition rate does.
How Many Years Does an Economics PhD Take?
Expect five to six years. Berkeley puts the whole process at approximately five to six years, with preparation for candidacy typically taking two to three years and the dissertation one to two more. Columbia says most students defend their theses after five or six years, and requires a third-year paper, colloquium presentations every semester from year three and a dissertation proposal defended before a committee of at least three faculty members before the end of year four.
Chicago designs a six-year program in which the first two years are coursework and the third year is full-time independent research under faculty guidance, with research and teaching filling most of the remaining time. Plan for the full length. The coursework years are only the start.
Questions About Economics Research Doctorates
How Competitive Are Economics PhD Programs?
Very. Minnesota says it receives far more applications from students who meet its standards than it can admit, and it weighs courses taken, letters of recommendation, research papers and evidence of economic theory beyond the intermediate level. Wisconsin awards funding on a competitive basis.
Do Economics PhD Students Get Paid?
At many programs, yes. Chicago says students in its Division of the Social Sciences are funded for the duration of the program with a full-tuition scholarship, student health insurance premium, the Graduate Student Services Fee and a living stipend. Funding rules vary, and Wisconsin says funding is awarded on a competitive basis.
How Long Does a PhD in Economics Take?
What Math Do You Need for an Economics PhD?
Wisconsin requires a three-course calculus sequence, a linear algebra course and a course in mathematical statistics, and calls these a bare minimum. Minnesota asks for multivariate calculus and linear algebra and recommends additional analysis, differential equations, optimization, topology, probability or measure theory.
Do You Need a Master’s Before an Economics PhD?
Not necessarily. Wisconsin requires a completed bachelor’s degree and says applicants come from economics, mathematics, statistics and other fields. Berkeley notes that it has no external terminal MA program. If your math is thin, a program like the one at UT Austin that says it prepares students for economics PhD programs can fill the gap.
What Are the Core Exams in an Economics PhD?
Chicago gives a three-part Core Examination in the summer after the first year, testing price theory, the theory of income and quantitative methods. Berkeley adds fields later: students prepare for examination in two fields, write a prospectus and take an oral examination before advancing to candidacy.
