Finishing the AA-T secures a place somewhere in the California State University system, without promising a seat at any one campus or in any one major. De Anza adds that the degree may not be the best option for students who have one CSU campus in mind or who plan to go outside the CSU. Settle on the campus you hope to graduate from first, then compare the course list with that campus’s psychology prerequisites.
What Does a Psychology AA-T Guarantee?
The AA-T follows a common 60-semester-unit pattern that California’s community colleges set up with all 23 CSU campuses, and completing it secures admission somewhere in the CSU system with no promise about the campus or the major. At De Anza, students who enroll at a CSU campus that accepts the degree complete no more than 60 semester units after transfer to finish a bachelor’s in psychology or an approved similar major.
After you transfer you start as a junior and do not repeat courses similar to ones you already completed. Applicants to historically Black colleges and universities, fully online and out-of-state universities and participating independent California universities are guaranteed the exact campus and major they apply to, so the promise is firmer at those schools than it is inside the CSU system.
Which Psychology Courses Count as the Transfer Major?
The core is nearly identical across colleges. Mt. San Antonio requires Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology and a statistics choice, then a biology choice and two more electives from psychology and related fields. Pasadena requires introductory psychology, a four-unit Research Methods in Psychology course and a statistics choice, with Introductory Biological Psychology among the biology choices.
Plan around the statistics and research methods courses, since all three colleges require both. De Anza gives you two statistics routes, Statistics and Research Methods in Social Science or Introduction to Statistics, and a six-unit Research Methods in Psychology course. Elective lists add social, developmental and abnormal psychology, and Pasadena’s adds African American, Asian American and Chicano/a psychology.
| College | Research Methods | Statistics | Biology Choice | Major Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mt. San Antonio College | PSYC 3 Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology | PSYC 10 or STAT C1000 | BIOL 1, BIOL 4 or PSYC 1B Biological Psychology | 19 to 23 semester units |
| Pasadena City College | PSYC 005 Research Methods in Psychology (4 units) | STAT 018, STAT 015 or STAT C1000 | PSYC 002, BIOL 003 or BIOL 011 | 20 to 21 semester units |
| De Anza College | PSYC 2 Research Methods in Psychology (6 units) | PSYC 15 or STATC 1000 | BIOL 10, BIOL 11 or PSYC 24 | 30 to 35 quarter units |
Counting Units at Semester and Quarter Colleges
Colleges count units in semesters or quarters, and De Anza uses quarters. Pasadena lists the requirement both ways: 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units, with 18 semester or 27 quarter units set aside for the major and a GPA of 2.0 or better. De Anza requires at least 90 quarter units, at least 18 of them completed at De Anza, and a 30 to 35 unit major.
At Mt. San Antonio, students earning an associate degree for transfer are not required to complete any other local graduation requirements. Ask a counselor which general education pattern, Cal-GETC, CSU GE Breadth or IGETC, suits your target campus.
Local Psychology AA or Transfer Degree: Which Fits?
Several colleges offer both. College of the Canyons lists a Psychology AA on an associate general education track and two AA-T versions, one built on the CSU general education breadth list and one on IGETC. Cuesta College awards a Psychology AA rather than an AA-T, which is a different credential.
Sierra College keeps its transfer major requirements in the Counseling Center and tells students to meet with a counselor about specific transfer requirements in every case. Keep that in mind as you pick the credential, since the right one depends on the kind of university you are heading to.
Transferring Beyond the CSU System
The AA-T reaches other systems too. A signed Transfer Admission Guarantee offers a guaranteed admission pathway to one of six participating University of California campuses, participating independent nonprofit universities in California are partners, and so are fully online universities and schools in other states. UC campuses set their own prerequisites, and UCLA, for example, asks psychology majors to finish seven preparation courses that include one in calculus, chemistry or physics and one in life or physiological science.
Match your community college electives to the campus you are aiming for before you register. El Camino calls the AA-T an excellent foundation for continuing studies at a CSU, the system the degree was designed for. When your target is a bachelor’s program, compare it in the psychology bachelor’s rankings.
Questions About Psychology Associate Degrees
What Does AA-T Mean for a Psychology Major?
AA-T stands for Associate in Arts for Transfer. The degree comes from California’s community colleges and is meant for students planning to finish a bachelor’s in psychology or an approved similar major at a CSU campus. It totals 60 semester units, covering the psychology core plus general education.
Does the Psychology AA-T Place You at a Chosen CSU Campus?
Is the Psychology AA-T Accepted at University of California Campuses?
It can lead there through the Transfer Admission Guarantee at six participating UC campuses. UC campuses set their own prerequisites, so compare the AA-T course list with the campus’s major preparation. UCLA’s psychology major, for instance, lists seven preparation courses, and De Anza notes the AA-T may not be the best option when you aim at one particular campus.
