How We Rank Psychology Programs for Working Adults

These bachelor's programs have official evidence that the degree can be completed online. We order them by the same national bachelor's comparison score as our other rankings, which weighs graduation rate, published cost, graduate earnings, program reputation and degrees awarded. It does not measure schedule fit, so compare each program's format notes. Read the full methodology.

Which Programs Qualify for This List?

  • The university offers a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has the institutional data needed for our national comparison.
  • An official school page confirms the psychology bachelor’s can be completed online.
  • The school’s own pages describe a format for working students, through short terms, flexible pacing, no set login times, rolling starts or a generous transfer policy.
  • The profile states the admission, math and transfer rules that apply, so online delivery is not mistaken for a promise of unlimited flexibility.

These rankings cover the general psychology category (CIP 42.0101). Specialized clinical, counseling, and school psychology programs have separate federal categories. Check each department’s degree focus and training requirements.

A program appears here when an official school page confirms the psychology bachelor’s can be completed online and describes a format that suits students with jobs, such as short terms, flexible pacing, no set login times or generous transfer rules. The order follows our national bachelor’s comparison score. That score does not measure how well a timetable fits your shifts or your family, so compare each program’s format before you choose.

Match Online Psychology Coursework to Your Work Week

Start with the length of a course. Liberty runs 8-week courses with no set login times, Arizona State teaches 39 classes of 7.5 weeks, and Southern New Hampshire uses 8-week terms across 40 courses. West Florida keeps the standard 16-week semester, which spreads the same material over more time.

Short terms mean more start dates, and they also mean less slack when a busy month hits. Penn State World Campus lets you set your own pace, with many students taking one or two courses per semester. Before you register, put your shifts and recurring commitments beside the course calendar, and check discussion deadlines, group work and exam windows.

Check the Math and Science Before You Commit to a Version

Psychology degrees online differ in how much math and science they ask for. Arizona State describes its BS as math- and science-focused, and says about 90% of the BS and BA curriculum is the same. Florida requires coursework in psychology, statistics, mathematics and biology.

Fort Hays State puts the choice in plain numbers: the BA adds 10 hours of a foreign language, the BS adds natural science and math, and the department recommends the BS for graduate school. The University of Arizona takes a different route and requires a minor or double major, so pick one that supports your current work.

Sources: [1][2][9][5]

Use Transfer Credit to Shorten the Degree

Transfer limits decide how much of your earlier coursework counts. Southern New Hampshire, Maryland Global Campus and West Florida each accept up to 90 credits, and SNHU requires at least 30 to be taken there. Liberty accepts up to 75% of the degree total, and Florida sorts transfer applicants by whether they have 12 to 59 credits or more.

Bring transcripts and course descriptions to every review, and ask which credits satisfy general education, the major and electives. Ask whether statistics and research methods are already covered, since those courses anchor the major. Oregon State works in quarter credits, so ask how your semester credits convert before you estimate a finish date.

Sources: [10][6][7][2][4]

Estimate the Cost of Finishing While You Keep Working

Build the estimate from per-credit prices. Fort Hays State lists $275.65 per credit hour, Maryland Global Campus lists $337 for Maryland residents, Southern New Hampshire lists $354, Oregon State lists $409, the University of Arizona lists $525, and Penn State World Campus lists $644 or $692. Multiply by the credits you still need after your transfer evaluation, then add fees, books and any software the courses require.

A slower pace lowers the cost per term but stretches the time you pay, so price both a one-course and a two-course schedule. Maryland Global Campus also lists $250 per credit for military students. Ask your employer about tuition assistance before you choose a pace.

Questions About Psychology Degrees for Working Adults

Can You Finish a Psychology Degree Online While Working Full-Time?

Yes, if the format matches your hours. Liberty has no set login times, Penn State World Campus lets you set your own pace, and Florida’s online degree is designed for students whose commitments make campus attendance impractical. Expect research methods and statistics either way, so plan study time around your shifts.

Sources: [7][11][2]

Which Programs Accept the Most Transfer Credit?

Southern New Hampshire, Maryland Global Campus and West Florida each accept up to 90 credits, and Liberty accepts up to 75% of the degree total. Ask each school for a free evaluation of your transcripts before you apply, since the number that counts toward your major can be lower than the number that transfers.

Sources: [10][6][7]

Which Online Psychology Degree Is the Least Math-Heavy?

Choose a BA or a version without a science emphasis. Fort Hays State’s BA trades the BS science and math hours for 10 hours of a foreign language, and Arizona State offers an online BA that shares about 90% of its curriculum with the BS. Every version still includes statistics and research methods.

Sources: [9][1]

Is an Online Psychology Bachelor’s Enough to Become a Psychologist?

Not on its own. A bachelor’s prepares you for research, human services, business and graduate study, while licensed practice depends on graduate training and your state’s rules. The psychologist career guide explains the graduate degrees and state licenses behind practice, the psychology degree jobs guide shows what a bachelor’s can open, and the online psychology guide compares master’s programs, including counseling degrees built for licensure.
