Choose between a standard psychology BA, which needs a minor in another field, and a Pre-Counseling concentration, which doesn't. Pre-Counseling is aimed at bachelor-level careers in counseling and the helping professions and at master's study in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling or social work, and its 12 core concentration courses must be completed at Nicholls. Junior Pre-Counseling students with a 2.7 GPA and a 3.0 in their core courses can apply for the Title IV-E Child Welfare Scholar Stipend Program, which pairs a stipend with a semester internship at a Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services regional office in Thibodaux. The standard track is sequenced, so courses must be taken in order, and English, math and every psychology course counted toward the major need at least a C.

How We Rank Psychology Programs in Louisiana

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national psychology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Louisiana’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. We feature up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Master’s lists weigh graduate tuition (25%), research activity (25%), program reputation (30%), and master’s degrees awarded (20%). Doctoral lists weigh research activity (35%), program reputation (35%), and doctoral degrees awarded (30%). Master’s lists require an official school source confirming a separately admitting master’s route. See the full ranking method.

Louisiana adopted the Licensed Psychological Associate license in Acts 2024, No. 286, and the board began accepting LPA applications on paper, outside the online portal. The Provisional Licensed Psychologist (PLP) is a doctoral-level license held during postdoctoral supervision. The Assistant to a Psychologist (ATAP) is a registration for unlicensed assistants, not a license. PSYPACT was authorized by Act 302 of the 2026 Regular Session (HB 486) and takes effect January 1, 2028. Until then, psychologists cannot practice in or from Louisiana under PSYPACT (https://lsbep.org/psypact/). EPPP rule revisions took effect June 20, 2026: LP candidates have four years from admission to candidacy to pass, with no limit on the number of attempts. ASPPB is moving to the Integrated EPPP, which will be the only version offered starting April 1, 2028.

Requirements summarized from the board’s official pages. Confirm the current rules with the board before you choose a graduate program.
