Research methods set the pace here. PSY 101, 121, 203 and the collaborative research course PSY 390 have to be taken one at a time, each a prerequisite for the next, so the major takes at least five semesters and no grade can fall below a C-. Around that core you choose three of eight foundation courses, three 300-level specialized courses and a student-led senior experience that can be an internship, integrative seminar or research project. Six specializations, including biopsychology and industrial and organizational psychology, are optional, and most students don't declare one.

Psychology BA
To declare psychology, earn at least a C in General Psychology and in Quantitative Methods or an approved statistics equivalent. Once you're in, you add a four-credit content course paired with a lab, then take one core course per cluster across four clusters: behavioral and systems neuroscience, clinical, cognitive and social. Six electives and a 400-level elective, open to declared juniors and seniors, finish the major. Fieldwork, research and internship credits are capped at six toward the major. The honors major asks for a 3.4 psychology GPA, a senior thesis and a poster presentation.

Psychology BA
This 39-credit BA is the flexible choice among Rowan's psychology degrees, built to pair with another major, a minor or a certificate. You can take it in person, fully online, as a three-year accelerated degree, or as a 3+1 with a community college partner. Students who want to keep going can add a master's in applied behavior analysis through a 4+1 option that needs 12 fewer credits than the two degrees separately. Research with faculty is open for credit, as a volunteer or through Federal Work Study, and recent graduates have gone into case management, behavior support and school counseling programs.

Psychology BA
Newark's psychology BA is the most popular major on campus, and it comes with some distinctive add-ons. You can pair it with the dual major in psychiatric rehabilitation, run jointly with Rutgers School of Health Professions in Piscataway, or add a minor in cognitive neuroscience or in youth development and juvenile justice. Students holding a 3.5 psychology GPA, a 3.0 overall GPA and 12 or more psychology credits can apply for the honors major, which ends in a year-long senior thesis (21:830:497 and 499) and 47 psychology credits. Undergraduates also join faculty labs, including neuroimaging work at the Rutgers University Brain Imaging Center.

2 schools in New Jersey awarded research doctorates in psychology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 2 of 2 eligible programs at this level.
Rutgers’ research doctorate has four areas: behavioral and systems neuroscience, clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, and social psychology. Students enter an area and work with a primary faculty mentor, while opportunities for collaboration extend across the department. The route to doctoral candidacy includes required coursework, a master’s thesis, and a qualifying examination before dissertation research. This is the full-time PhD in the psychology department; Rutgers’ separate professional psychology school offers different doctoral degrees and training arrangements.

Psychology PhD
Applicants choose one of four research concentrations at Rutgers-Newark: developmental, neuroscience, cognition or social psychology. There's no clinical PhD here, and the training is research first. You take 60 credits of coursework including statistics and experimental design, and you're in mentored research from your first semester. In the third year you pass a qualifying exam that's an NIH-style grant proposal, evaluated orally and in writing, before forming a dissertation committee. Everyone admitted receives a full stipend and tuition remission. Applications are due December 1, the GRE isn't required, and your statement should name the faculty you want to work with.

Psychology AA
Plan your electives first. The psychology AA gives you four open psychology slots, and the menu runs from addictive behavior and psychopharmacology to abuse and violence in the family, educational psychology and psychology of aging. The fixed part is General Psychology, Psychology of Human Development, Statistics I and a choice of adolescent or child psychology, set among sociology, philosophy, speech and a lab science. If you want a bachelor's afterward, the 3+1 option adds Psychology of Scientific Thinking, Statistics in Psychology and Research Methods in Psychology at RCSJ before a final year at Rowan.

Psychology Associate in Arts
If you plan to finish a psychology bachelor's at Rutgers University-Camden, Atlantic Cape has a transfer agreement for psychology majors and asks you to talk to the department chair so your courses line up. The one detail to watch: PSYC226 transfers there as a free elective, not a program course. The plan includes General Psychology, Statistical Methods, a personality and adjustment course and a lifespan option such as Child Psychology, Human Development or Psychology of Adulthood. Seven credits of liberal arts electives leave room to explore. The degree can be earned part-time.

Psychology AA
This 60-credit associate degree is built as the first stretch of a longer road: after the AA you can stay for a third year of Rowan-curriculum psychology courses taught by RCSJ faculty, then finish a BA at Rowan University. Before that you take General Psychology, Statistics I, Psychology of Human Development and either adolescent or child psychology. Four program electives fill out the rest, drawn from addictive behavior, psychopharmacology, aging, social psychology, abnormal psychology and others. The finished pathway points to bachelor's-level work such as registered behavioral technician and mental health associate.

Social Science, Psychology Associate in Arts
Salem's psychology option is a 60-credit Associate in Arts that weaves psychology into a broad liberal arts plan. Psychology courses include General Psychology in the first semester, a human development course, Educational Psychology and Assessment, and Abnormal Psychology, with a statistics course in the third. Around them sit world history, sociology, ethics, American government and a science. Students finish able to compare competing theories of behavior, weigh basic research methods and present on a human-behavior issue. The program prepares you to transfer to a four-year school, and the college lists work such as psychiatric technician and social work assistant for graduates who stop at the associate degree.

The New Jersey State Board of Psychological Examiners licenses psychologists in New Jersey. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology does not by itself qualify you to practice as a psychologist.
Source: Frequently Asked Questions - NJ State Board of Psychological Examiners
The New Jersey psychology board does not issue a separate master’s-level psychology credential. Master’s graduates who want to provide therapy usually pursue a counseling or marriage and family therapy license from a different board.
The board issues only the psychologist license. There is no master’s-level credential such as a psychological associate. Candidates who still need supervised hours apply for a Three-Year Permit, which converts to a Practicing Psychologist application once the hours are approved. The One-Year Permit tied to the old oral exam has been discontinued. P.L.2020, c.134 removed the rule that at least one year of experience had to be postdoctoral. New Jersey enacted PSYPACT as N.J.S.A. 45:14B-49 under L.2021, c.229. Licenses renew every two years and require 40 CE credits per cycle.
Requirements summarized from the board’s official pages. Confirm the current rules with the board before you choose a graduate program.
