You can begin research training well before graduate school in psychology programs in New York. Queensborough's AS requires statistics and research methods, and Suffolk's AA starts with Statistics I and Introduction to Psychology in the first semester. At bachelor's level, Binghamton connects a subject course with its corresponding laboratory, while Stony Brook offers supervised research for credit and an honors thesis. These ten programs let you compare the work you'll complete, from associate coursework through Stony Brook's summer-start MA and CUNY's doctoral training.

4 schools in New York awarded psychology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 1,212 bachelor’s programs nationwide. This section shows the top 4 of 76 eligible programs at this level.
Binghamton's psychology BA ties a laboratory to a foundational subject such as perception, learning, cognition or behavioral neuroscience. You'll complete statistical analysis before research methods, then take the methods course before the laboratory. The major also includes substantial mathematics and science study outside psychology. Faculty research and internships can contribute to the degree: an approved combination of eight research or internship credits can replace one advanced psychology course. That option gives you a concrete reason to plan supervised experience with an advisor.

Stony Brook lets you take psychology as a BS, which leans on natural sciences and mathematics, or as a BA, which gives a broader interdisciplinary mix. Either way, supervised research through PSY 273 can put you in a faculty lab for one to three repeatable credits, sometimes working with a graduate student. By mid-April of junior year you can apply to the honors program if you've finished PSY 103, PSY 201, two survey courses and a 300-level course. Honors means a two-semester senior thesis with a faculty mentor and a 3.50 GPA in psychology coursework.

Hunter treats entry to the major as a checkpoint. Before you can continue, both introductory psychology courses need at least a B, math needs a C and your GPA has to stand at 2.00, and you declare in person with a psychology adviser who'll ask for your transcripts. After that you pick a focus: General Psychology or one of seven tracks, including animal behavior, cognitive, clinical and health psychology. Statistical Methods and an experimental psychology course are four credits each, and two lab science courses round out a major of 43 credits or more.

Baruch’s psychology BA moves from general psychology and statistics into a four-credit research methods course. In that course, students design projects using approaches such as surveys and experiments while examining validity and research ethics. Foundation choices include cognition, development, personality, and psychopathology. A fully online completion option begins in fall 2026 for students who already hold an associate degree; the eligibility requirement distinguishes it from the campus bachelor’s pathway.

1 school in New York has a separately admitting master’s route confirmed on an official school page and reported psychology master’s degrees in 2023–24, scored against 294 master’s programs nationwide. You can apply to these master’s programs without entering a Ph.D. program. This section shows the top 1 of 1 eligible programs at this level.
Stony Brook's full-time General Psychology MA starts in summer, so you'll begin graduate statistics before the fall semester. A required first-year seminar introduces current research and research practices through faculty and visiting speakers. You can choose courses across cognition, development, neuroscience, clinical psychology, and social and health psychology, with an MA advisor helping plan the selection. Faculty research opportunities depend on your interests and qualifications, and internships offer additional experience. The degree requires 30 credits and follows a one-year schedule.

1 school in New York awarded research doctorates in psychology in 2023–24. Doctoral scores leave out tuition because funding offers, not sticker price, decide the real cost. This section shows the top 1 of 1 eligible programs at this level.
CUNY's general psychology doctorate includes research areas such as critical social and personality psychology, cognition, development, industrial-organizational psychology, and psychology and law. You'll complete two doctoral statistics courses and ethics study, with approved equivalents allowed. The training area sets additional coursework and the content of the first and second doctoral examinations. An original dissertation requires an oral defense. You also complete at least two semesters of teaching, field or laboratory training, with the advisory committee determining the combination appropriate to your area.

Psychology AA
BMCC's Psychology AA lets you choose a General or STEM concentration. The General route includes choices in development and personality or abnormal psychology, plus sociology or anthropology. The STEM route adds Brain and Behavior, Cognitive Psychology and calculus, with biology recommended in the common core. Both routes include Research in Psychology, covering data collection and interpretation, and Behavioral Statistics, which includes APA-style reporting. Your concentration changes the science preparation and electives, so compare the plan with the psychology major at your intended transfer college.

Psychology AA
LaGuardia's Psychology AA requires statistics alongside general, abnormal, developmental and social psychology. You'll choose between Environmental Psychology and Urban Black Psychology, adding a place-based perspective to the major. Another choice covers personality, gender or later development, and sociology or cultural anthropology connects the major to neighboring social sciences. The current requirements allow Experiential Learning in Psychology or unrestricted elective credit. That distinction matters when you plan practical experience: the experiential course is an option within the degree, alongside the required classroom sequence.

Liberal Arts and Sciences: Social Science, Psychology Option AA
Suffolk's psychology AA is the psychology option inside its Social Science degree, laid out semester by semester for students transferring to a four-year school. Statistics I and Introduction to Psychology come in your first semester. Over the next three you add a child, lifespan or adolescent psychology course, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology and a psychology elective, alongside history, politics, biology and two semesters of a world language. The plan meets the SUNY Transfer Path for Psychology, so passing these courses with grades of C or above earns junior status at a SUNY campus. Ammerman, Eastern and Michael J. Grant campuses offer it.

Psychology AS
Queensborough's Psychology AS pairs a research methods course with statistics and a laboratory science experience. In methods, you'll practice conducting research and analyzing data, then choose subject courses in child or lifespan development and abnormal psychology or personality. Major electives let you add topics such as cross-cultural psychology, aging, positive psychology or childhood disorders. Speech communication is also required. The 60-credit degree combines those choices with CUNY's common core, giving you a defined research foundation to take into a psychology bachelor's program.

This comparison focuses on the 10 programs featured above.
The associate programs make different choices about how you study behavior. BMCC offers General and STEM concentrations, with the STEM route adding brain and cognition courses, requiring calculus and recommending biology. LaGuardia requires either Environmental Psychology or Urban Black Psychology, plus a choice of experiential learning or free electives. Queensborough pairs methods with statistics and a laboratory science experience. Suffolk's psychology option is laid out semester by semester for transfer and meets the SUNY Transfer Path for Psychology, so grades of C or above earn junior status at a SUNY campus. Compare those required courses with the bachelor's major you want to enter.
For bachelor's study, distinguish a required assignment from an optional opportunity. Binghamton requires a laboratory linked to a foundational subject and lets approved research or internship credits replace an advanced course. Baruch requires research methods built around student-designed projects. Stony Brook offers supervised research for one to three repeatable credits and an honors program with a two-semester senior thesis. Hunter treats entry to the major as a checkpoint, with minimum grades in the introductory courses and math and a declaration meeting with an adviser. Your course plan determines whether you leave with a laboratory assignment, an extended project, community experience or a combination.
Graduate schedules deserve an early check. Stony Brook's full-time General Psychology MA begins in summer with statistics, followed by a fall research seminar and courses across psychology. Faculty research depends on your interests and qualifications, so discuss the possibilities alongside your course choices. CUNY's Psychology PhD uses training areas across multiple campuses. Its common requirements include doctoral statistics, ethics, examinations and an original dissertation, while the training area sets additional expectations. Start with the area and prospective faculty before assuming that every psychology doctorate involves the same work.
The New York State Board for Psychology licenses psychologists in New York. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology does not by itself qualify you to practice as a psychologist.
Source: License Requirements for Psychology, NYSED Office of the Professions
The New York psychology board does not issue a separate master’s-level psychology credential. Master’s graduates who want to provide therapy usually pursue a counseling or marriage and family therapy license from a different board.
New York licenses psychologists only at the doctoral level; the State Board for Psychology issues no master’s-level credential such as a psychological associate. Education Law Section 7605 allows a person with a master’s degree in psychology to work under a licensed psychologist’s supervision in certain state-regulated or state-funded programs, but this is an exemption from licensure, not a license. The title psychologist is restricted to licensees.
Requirements summarized from the board’s official pages. Confirm the current rules with the board before you choose a graduate program.
