How We Rank Psychology Programs in Indiana

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national psychology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Indiana’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. We feature up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Associate lists weigh graduation rate (30%), published tuition (25%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (20%). Read how state lists are built.

Psychology Licensure in Indiana

The Indiana State Psychology Board licenses psychologists in Indiana. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology does not by itself qualify you to practice as a psychologist.

Psychologist (with Optional Health Service Provider in Psychology Endorsement)

Degree
Doctoral degree in psychology (PhD or PsyD) from a recognized institution and a board-approved psychology program. The internship is listed on the transcript or verified by the program. The HSPP endorsement requires a doctorate in clinical, counseling, school, or another applied health service area of psychology.
Exam
Indiana jurisprudence exam (50 questions, 75 percent to pass), then the EPPP. The board has not adopted EPPP Part 2.
Supervised Experience
No post-doctoral supervised experience is required for the base psychologist license. The HSPP endorsement requires a 1,500-hour internship plus at least 1,600 hours of supervised experience over no less than 12 months, including 900 direct client hours. This can come from doctoral practicum, post-internship experience, or a combination (868 IAC 1.1-13-3.1). The statute describes this as 2 years of experience in a health service setting.
Practice
Licensed psychologists practice psychology independently. The independent diagnosis and treatment of mental and behavioral disorders requires the HSPP endorsement. Without it, a psychologist may diagnose and treat only under HSPP supervision while qualifying for the endorsement, or within a limited license under IC 25-33-1-18.

Source: PLA: Psychology Licensing Information

The Indiana psychology board does not issue a separate master’s-level psychology credential. Master’s graduates who want to provide therapy usually pursue a counseling or marriage and family therapy license from a different board.

The Indiana State Psychology Board licenses doctoral-level psychologists only and issues no master’s-level credential. Its only non-doctoral credential is a grandfathered limited license (IC 25-33-1-18) for people who held a basic certificate before its repeal on June 30, 1985, and it is not issued to new applicants. Indiana is a PSYPACT member (IC 25-33.5). HSPP psychologists need 40 CE hours every two years, including 6 in ethics. School psychologist credentials under IC 20-28-12 are issued under education law, not by this board.

Requirements summarized from the board’s official pages. Confirm the current rules with the board before you choose a graduate program.
