Psychology Major
Before you enter the psychology major at the University of Kentucky, you complete Introduction to Psychology, a one-hour orientation and Experimental Psychology. The major core then adds Applications of Statistics in Psychology, Cognition, Brain and Behavior, Social Psychology and Cultural Processes and Developmental Psychology. You choose two electives or one four-hour lecture and lab, from Forensic Psychology to Behavioral Genetics, and finish with a capstone. The capstone can be a senior internship, a topic seminar or the two-semester Senior Honors Thesis, which needs a 3.6 psychology GPA and a faculty sponsor. Independent research courses and field internships with a site mentor and a faculty sponsor give you hands-on options along the way.

Each program gets the same comparison score it earns in our national psychology model, calculated against the nationwide group that meets the numeric and directory criteria. We then order Kentucky’s eligible programs by that score within each degree level. We feature up to 10 programs, taking the next highest-ranked program from each degree-level list in turn. Scores are compared only within the same degree level. Bachelor’s lists weigh graduation rate (20%), published tuition (20%), graduate earnings (20%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (15%). Associate lists weigh graduation rate (30%), published tuition (25%), program reputation (25%), and degrees awarded (20%). How these scores work.
These picks compare only the programs featured in the lists above.

Kentucky has 23 ranked psychology bachelor’s programs, and 16 of them are at private schools, yet public universities hold six of the top eight spots. University of Kentucky ranks first and awarded the most bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24 (283).
Price does not follow the public and private line in Kentucky psychology. University of the Cumberlands, a private school ranked seventh, lists $9,875 in schoolwide tuition and required fees for 2024–25, less than every public university except Kentucky State University ($9,387). At the other end, Centre College charges $52,820 and Bellarmine University $48,770. Centre also posts the highest schoolwide graduation rate on the list, 81%, while Kentucky State’s is 35%. Both rates cover all first-time, full-time students, not psychology majors alone.
Three public universities each awarded more than 200 psychology bachelor’s degrees in 2023–24: University of Kentucky (283), Eastern Kentucky University (245), and University of Louisville (205). Asbury University (12) and Transylvania University (19) are far smaller. Each of those two also ranks for the bachelor’s. A bachelor’s degree in psychology is not a license to practice.
The Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology licenses psychologists in Kentucky. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology does not by itself qualify you to practice as a psychologist.
Kentucky’s psychology board issues master’s-level credentials: the Licensed Psychological Associate (supervised practice) and the Licensed Psychological Practitioner (independent practice of certain functions after two full-time supervised years as an LPA). 2024 HB 56 (2024 Ky. Acts ch. 93) cut the LPP supervised experience requirement from five years to two full-time years, and the board’s 201 KAR 26:190 amendment took effect February 12, 2026. Kentucky is a PSYPACT member (KRS 319.054, effective June 29, 2021). Since July 15, 2026, new applicants need an FBI fingerprint background check (KRS 319.045), and the board’s homepage says this is delaying applications filed on or after that date.
Requirements summarized from the board’s official pages. Confirm the current rules with the board before you choose a graduate program.
